what is a reasonable expectation of trouble free hours from a new outboard in the 200 hp range -assuming regular maintenance is carried out according to factory specs?<br />The reaon for the question is my fishing guide who bought a brand new 200 2cycle merc 5years ago and has had nothing but trouble-main bearings gone and the 4th powerhead just went at 500 hours[the other 3 were lasted as little as under 100 hours]The motor was on a 23'Bayliner Trophy,and used to run inand out from the dock to the fishing grounds, so got about 2 hours a day use in the summer ,and was laid up for most of the winter-all regular maintenance done by the dealer according to factory spec's<br />At this point, he needs a new motor-but the question is what to get?<br /> A new 200 hp 4 stroke installed is going to cost close to $30,000 with taxes[CANADIAN]

Couple questions if I may, is this an opti were discussing or just the good old carb or efi Model?<br />At 500 hours I consider the big Merc just brokin in.<br />3 powerheads at under 100 hours means there is a real problem with A the components that are being re-used, B He is using 2stroke oil isnt he??<br /><br />What was the cause of the original power head failure, you say the main bearings were gone, but you dont say why? Lack of Oil? Water indigestion?<br /><br />Terrible time of the year for fishing guide to be in his position (buying a motor) I would sure be questioning the Stealer thats doing the work for him, have they got a reason why the powerheads they are installing are only lasting 100 hours......I smell someting fishy coming from the Dallas Waterfront..<br />Cheers

It surely is not the Mercury"s fault... There is a BIG problem somewhere else.. Oil, engine rpm's, dealer, and a host of other things..
