house painter question QUICK

[crab bait]

been doin' some exterior trim painting an had to replace afew window sills..rot.. ( no biggy )<br /><br />but alot of the trim i scraped most the old paint off an of coarse there are some still stuck patches of paint.. <br /><br />the trims are not rottin' but close to it.. alota deep cracks an such..<br /><br />if'n i paint ..( which i'm usin' a solid deck stain white ) i know the cracks will open up in time an the paint pops off an repeat a vicious cycle..<br /><br />can i/is it possible/have you heard of mixin' "DURHAM's WATER PUTTY" thin an brushing on a coat.. as a sealer .. then paint.. <br /><br />i'm doin' it tommorrow come heck or high water..

I've used Durham's as a filler but never as a "brush on" primer. Dunno... just might work.

I've read that you can paint over old stain, but shouldn't stain over old paint. Paint leaves a barrier on top of the wood, wheras stain works by sinking (being absorbed) into the wood. The old paint would prevent the stain from sinking into the wood like it's supposed to. Just a heads up, maybe there are some pro painters here who can provide additional info...

Crabby, being as I can't see your project this is just a guess, but what I would do is get some polyurethane caulk and a putty knife and fill the cracks. The poly caulk adheres really well and will keep the cracks from opening up to moisture. <br />Lakelivin is right about alot of the stains intended for house and deck coating. If they don't have access to soaking into the wood they will leave a lot of wet and sticky bloctches where it sits on the surface. just my experience, Chief

thanks all,, but it's done-did..<br /><br />mixed up the putty loose an stiff brushed it on.. quite like mason paint.. this stuff's the poop.. expands as it hardens..<br /><br />an hardens quick.. then wire brushed somewhat enlue of sand paper.. <br /><br />the stain i refer to is a thick soild stain almost like paint.. <br /><br />reason for use,, it's my answer in one can.. no primer needed an it dries to no thickness..<br /><br />thickness equates to snap/crackle/POP..
