I need the housing for my water pump. #395073 which has been replaced by sierra 18-3393. for a 1977 115HP. Problem is the sireea housing only has 1 hole for water pipe my engine has two. Any advice. Do I remove one pipe? if so, which one? can I still get the original somewhere?

Re: housing for water pump

That kit number is listed for pumps with only one water tube Andrew. No....you don't want to remove one pipe. I would see your local John/Rude dealer or just get the impeller kit without housing if the cup is still in good shape. Most likely, the easiest thing to do is get the OEM kit form Bomby.

Re: housing for water pump

Thanks obj. After reading other threads I think I may need to replace head gasket. As I have new impeller in can hear it turn when turning flywheel manually but still no water. Do I replace jsu the head gasket or do the whole lot. I am by no means a mechanic but I have the manual and will try. Is this a job for me or a pro.

I have also replaced tstats and made sure there is no blockage in water tubes. Does anyone think the head gaskets might be the problem here? I relly need some expert advice.

Hi Andrew. What we need to know is, what is the original problem? Over heat? Water flow?

Hi OBJ, heat alarm sounded. No water. have taken off water plate covers and head gaskets. Cylinder 2 & 4 full of crud and bits of impeller in water chanels. looks like motor has been in salt and not flushed. Pistons look great(appear to have been machined recently)will clean all the crap out , replace head gaskets, water jacket seals and tstats on the weekend. Should I do anything else as well.also need new seal for drive shaft in the impeller housing.

OBJ, I must add a huge thanks to you and all on this forum. Between you and my manual I finally think I might get this working and be skiing again this summer.

Yes there is something else to look at Andrew. With the heads off, look at the water deflectors around the cylinders. There will be two on each bank. What they amount to are rubber plugs that direct the flow off water around the cylinders. Replace them. The are inexpensive and can be bought at any John/Rude dealer. Easy to install.

Glad you found the problem also! Check real good for pieces of pump impeller.

Good luck and keep us posted to your progress.

forgot to say I have also ordered the deflectors. The ones in there were swollen abd blocking passage. to clean water chanels can I use CLR (don't know if you get it in the US). removes calcium.

Hey Andrew,
It's Rosco here .You dropped in on my thread about the cooked 35 Johnson.Looks like were battling the same demons.
Good idea with the CLR. How are you going to clean up the gasket face of your block? My big concern is getting crap into the cylinders.
Let's hope we both sort our troubles in time for some skiing and fishing.

Good luck

Re: housing for water pump

Hi rosco, I thought of stuffing some clean rags into the cylinders(I have heaps of cloth nappies)the face on the block is fairly clean though. What about emory paper on a flat bit of aluminium or something. Also when I dropped the leag again last night I found that the drive shaft seal at the top of the water pump is shot so i think water may have been going into the leg. Have ordered all the parts and will clean everything this week and put together on tuesday. I can't believe my gaskets aren;t even blown. Mate reckons I've been kissed by an angel on this thing.

Also want to add a pisser while i'm at it. Any advice. Do I just need to drill and tap the hole in the water cover plate on cylinder 2 then attach an elbow and tube to it.

Re: housing for water pump

Hello Andrew...just catching up on your progress here. Sounds like you have it under control. Don't know if 3M products are available there in Australia but they make a nice pad for cleaning and works well on aluminum. Just be careful not to take off a bunch of metal what ever you use.

Best place to add a tell tale is on the exhaust cover. Down in the lower right hand corner of the cover is a square place that could be utilize for this. I wouldn't go drilling into the head covers. The little square place is the best because this is water right from the pump. The metal there isn't very thick so becarful about drilling....fact it would be best to take the cover off before doing the drilling. You can then see how much room you have. And if you add the tell tale there, run the tell tale hose up over the head and down and out a hole in the lower pan. The loop over the head will help make every thing fill with water when the engine is started.

Re: housing for water pump

Thanks OBJ, I will look at that tonight after work, I only thought of the water cover on the cylinder heads as I saw it done that way in another thread, but I think I trust you more than another shadetree mechanic.. I am pretty sure you can buy 3m products here, I will have a look and let you know how I progress.

Used the CLR to clean out all the gunk and calcification in the water chambers, bits of impeller and stones. Water mow gets through everything.Tonight I will clean and sand the heads. What grit wet&dry should I use?

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I Have water!!! Changed head gaskets, and vernatherm, still no water.Removed thermostat got water. Replaced vernatherm valve and it worked. Appeared the hole in the valve for the vernatherm was too deep and wasn't allowing the vernatherm to push it in when reaching temp. Added the tell tale and it works great. Thanks OBJ
