Ok rehosted the pics Can you see them now. Please say you can.

Link...When they say liftime support in the brocheres believe it. This is a 1986 craft and they have taken the time to answer all my questions and talk me through things. Granted I have spent a couple bucks on hard to get items for my restoration but they were also helpful before I sent them money. Vary few companys can truthfully boast such things.

Re: Hovercraft; Neoteric Racer Rebuild

I see the pics..

BTW, I was down at a friends truck repair shop the other day, and saw a big roll of hovercraft skirting material (probably about 4' wide, not sure how long). This is probably military stuff (they get a lot of military scrap/surplus stuff).

Not sure if it'd help, but if so contact me.. My friends uncle owns the place, might be able to get a good deal (shipping may be killer though).

Re: Hovercraft; Neoteric Racer Rebuild

I have compleated one of the small holes and almost compleate with the second so this leaves me with only one major hole left, Of course it is the worst of the lot. I will post the pics soon.

Today for something diffrent I tore into the engine. Keep in mind I am no mechanic but in the spirit of project I am going to attempt everything that is feasable with the ocasinal guidence from a local small engine mechanic, I owe him big already.

Vacumed out sunflowers as per sbn advice, and checked compression 120 and 30 Ouch! Took the cylinder off to have a new piston installed and found two things. #1 was that the cylander will only need to be honed and a new ring set should correct the problem. #2 was the mouses emergency rations of sunflowers down below the piston with the crank shaft. Keep in mind that to test the compression I pulled on it several times, so his emergency rations have now been partially rendered into mush.

Dale (my patient advisor) looked and determined that I should be ok with a thorough flushing and cleaning of the bearings. What a job and the consequences for not getting it cleaned well enoufgh is an estimated $400 job on the crankshaft.

Final assesment for the day, I think i need a garage kitty that is also trained in the proper use of a sniper's rifle.

Braindead, thanks for the offer but the skirt material is already on order. I got a feeling that is heavier stuff than i need anyways.

Woooo Hoooo.... I can see.....
That looks like it will be alot of fun. I wish I had something like that to tinker with instead of this 26 ft beast of mine. At leats you can put yours in the garage to work on it. Not to mention how much fun it will be when your done and get to run... or fly it lol
Keep the pics and the progress reports coming.

Re: Hovercraft; Neoteric Racer Rebuild

Very little progress since last post but here are the pics I promised. 1) compleated repair except final sanding 2) almost compleated repair 3) The Beast, but its days are numbered.

The rings and gaskets are supposed to be here tomarrow so hopfully I will hear the motor come to life soon.

Once I get the motor running it is back to the critical glass work. Then I will get the skirt made and do some flying! (I cannot wait) The cosmetic repairs and cleanup will have to wait till I get some seat time. Wow I cannot believe this is comming together, I never lost faith just a little confidence at times. But once again I am excited, wont be long now!

Re: Hovercraft; Neoteric Racer Rebuild

Yippiee!!! It runs. Got her put back together, stuck the fuel line in a gas can pumped it up and pulled a few times. Didnt seem to want to fire so I pulled a plug checked for spark and put a drizzle of gas in for good measure. Started on the next pull. Let her run at a fast idle for a minute or so shut it off and tried again, once again didnt want to start but with just a drizzle of gas it restarted. My guess is proabably to much oil in it from the rebuild? Does this sound plausable.

I am one happy camper, it runs. Wont be long now!

Re: Hovercraft; Neoteric Racer Rebuild

Sounds plausible to me. I would let her idle for a while and use some top oil in case the rings are stuck just from sitting.
I would say she was shut down because of the damage to the hull and not the motor. I when you crank her if she doesn't hammer or knock I would let her run and dribble some good gas treatment thru her.
Me myself I like to run a little at a time marvel mystery oil thru them.
keep us posted

Re: Hovercraft; Neoteric Racer Rebuild

what typa carb(s) on that there motor. pumper or float bowl?
Every single motor I've dealt with that had sat for while, etc. had crap in choke and or low speed passages.
Bubbas right about wetting cyl walls to help rings imo. For first fire of outboard in spring I squirt a 50/50 gas oil mix through plug holes w/ syringe--about 10cc or so per hole.
Maybee you could use that SeaFoam stuff others on this board have posted about. Sposed to be liquid gold for a motor. I may try SF myself when I fire my Big Johnson for the first time.

Pat and Neumanns

If you use seafoam, remember only to do it when you are able to run the stuff out of it afterwards. I would recommend to wait with seafoam, deep creap etc. to you are able to run it in water for 20 mins afterwards with load. Thats the best.
