BAH HUMBUG! I never take guests. If they want to go for a boat ride, let them buy their own boat.

I have a few steadfast rules:

1. Guests clean the boat at the end of the day.
2. I am as accommodating as the airlines industry when it comes to arrival and departure times. I've left a more than a few at the dock over the years.
3. Drinking on the boat is welcome, as long as you bring a sufficient quantity of a brand approved by the captain.
4. All kids and pets are left at the dock.
5. No flip flops or bare feet if we're fishing.

I have a complete different view on this subject. I ONLY take folks on my boating/fishing trips that have the exact same likes and dislike and interests that I have and therefore I've never had to stop fishing to bring in anybody... Choose your guests wisely and fish-on... Of course 99.999% of the time my guests are my sons and/or wife and they like fishing as much as I do and we get along wonderfully, except when they out fish me...okay that's every time...

I guess I treat it just as I would guests over to my house: they are guests, we dote on 'em some and cut 'em some slack because they're not used to what we do. We don't take folks out often and most of the people we would invite along are going to be very conscientious, so that probably makes it easier.

Another factor that makes it easier for us is that we're never more than a 1/2 hour from the pier (and rarely that far). If we had to run someone back in, it'd be fast in and fast out so no biggie. I can see where being out on big water would have some different considerations.

I prefer, but dont demand that my guests bring enough drinks and snacks for themselves. I will furnish the meals and the gas. But what really gets me riled is when I have to untie from our "party group" and run someone back to the dock because they are bored or have other plans. Be prepared to stay the day, relax, have a drink and chill.

Family and grandkids, I tell them I won't fish for an hour then quit because they are bored. Minimum trip with them is 3 hours. I tell them to bring a phone so they can Facebook/Skype/ whatever when they are done.

Fishing and duck hunting buddies are different. If I tell them I am leaving the dock at 5am, at 5:05 I'm gone and not coming back. If I tell them to be there at 6am to help load the boat (all my stuff is in the garage) and they show up at 6:30 I'm not coming back. If I tell them to be there at 5am and they call me at 4:45 to say they just woke up and are leaving the house in 10, guess what? If they call and say they are late but going to be at the dock in 5 minutes I will wait. I tell them to bring ANYTHING they may want/need within reason. I have had to share my lunch and supply equipment but those people don't get invited back.

I will not return them to the dock before I am done because they have to take the kids to soccer, or need to go home and make the wife a lunch, or are bored. It's my boat, and all the details of time to go and time to quit, what we will be doing, where we are fishing/hunting, how we are fishing or hunting, are discussed ahead of time. Yes things change and are usually not a problem.

If I take them in my boat they are my guests and I make a lot of effort to accomodate them. They have to follow the boat rules. Other than that, they are my guests and I've invited them to enjoy themselves. I've never asked for gas money or accepted it when offered, but I sure remember who offers. ;)

I invite, I pay, if anyone wishes to pitch in, I do accept, however most of my friends know it's a 100.00 minimum, to drive down, launch fee's and the rest to go fish. I have had a couple guys that just wouldnt even offer, so they only went once. Not my job to inform folks of the obvious, at least in my world. If I'm a guest, I know slipping a hundie always helps, and it's cheaper than owning a boat.

If anyone needs to leave early, we just don't take em, it's too costly and time consuming to waste time being a taxi, all of this is disscussed before we go. Never had a problem, because I will define the schedule up front. EZ as pie.
Boats are expensive, and all my guys know this.
