How and what to grind?

Ok, I see a lot of mentioning of grinding in the forums. I am currently doing restore on my BL 1997 and this might be silly question, but what and how much do you grind. I am going to be removing stringers and transom. So I know I need to grid away what I cannot cut so it is flush, but do you grind past that poly, all the way to the hull, and if so, how many inches on both sides? Also do I need to do this, if I am going to use epoxy for transom and stringer?

I personally use an angle grinder with 24 grit sanding wheels which takes it down pretty quick. My rule of thumb, I guess, is that you want smooth surfaces to lay your new glass, so grind what's needed to do that.

Re: How and what to grind?

Some guys grind the whole hull, I don't know why. I mean they grind everything from gunwhale to gunnel.:p

I grind where new glass is going and nothing else.
Knock all the big imperfections down, it doesn't need to be a billiard table but
sharp edges need knocking down, run your hand over it, if it feels smooth it is. Sharp lips can be feathered out.
If you're using epoxy its gonna stick like stink anyway.

Re: How and what to grind?

You need to make sure you have a smooth surface ( ie, no jagged pieces, or lumps ) so that you don't have problems with air bubbles. They can be hard enough to get out without having the glass try to "tent" itself over something that could have been ground down.

Make sure you don't get overly aggressive and grind the hull down to the gel coat though ( I managed to get close to that in a couple of places and had to reglass for strength )

Prep is the key to a good glass job...don't get lazy with it. If you plan out exactly what you are going to do with the glass/epoxy you plan to use, then you don't have to do the whole hull, but it stinks to have to break out the grinder again to finish something that you could have gotten out of the picture early in the process ( something I have to do, because I got lazy )

Don't forget...use a good dust mask ( not the paper type ), preferably half face with the HEPA filters-will cost about $35, but it's worth it for your health, and the replacement filters are cheap. Safety goggles for your eyes, and always buy a Tyvek suit larger than you think you need so that you have room to stoop and reach without exposing your skin ( full hood type ). Keeps tons of the glass dust away from you and your laundry machines.

You would also be well advised to try to "tent" your boat when grinding to keep the dust as localized as possible....it's not good for your health, it certainly isn't good for the health of your family and pets if it's flying all over the place.

Re: How and what to grind?

Took one stringer out yesterday. Used a Ryobi 4'' grinder with a circular saw 3.5''. Works great, and does not kick back. I was able to cut it almost flush with a rest of the glass. There is small track where the stringer was. It was not glued so I was able to "just" pry it out (with little convincing). Now I am wondering if I need to grind all the way so that the track is gone, or can I just place new one in it, using some PL to attach it and be done with it. I'll be using epoxy for glassing. I'll post some photos tonight.

Re: How and what to grind?

Another concern with grinding is contamination. Anywhere you are going to bond new glass needs to be as clean as possible. (even when using epoxy) Any darkened areas in the original glass is contamination. Water will penetrate fiberglass over time. If you see any dark areas it is most likely contaminated. No need to go crazy, just be advised that even epoxy wont bond to dirt.

An example. This area is contaminated and is missing resin. The area around it has been ground just enough to get it clean without grinding too much.

Picture says a thousand words. I saw stuff all over like that, but pretty shallow. Still grinding, although not the whole hull. Just 4 1/2 inch on each side of the stringer. Will post some pictures on my project thread later. Thanks for your help guys.

They are different questions though.

You could make one of the a build thread so to speak and ask all your questions in there.
