I have a 74 chrysler 15 hp and a 87 sears gamefisher (chrysler) 15. they both use the same powerhead, but my question is how are the coils on the magneto held on?

I pulled the flywheel off and didnt see any bolts holding them in, but they were pretty snug.

how do you get them off?

thanks

If you look at the ends of the core laminations, you will see that top one is bent up. This is actually not a lamination but a spring clip. You pull out the clip and the coil slides right off the laminated core.

I make it sound easy--it is not. You will find youself cursing a bit. My recommendation? Be certain to buy new retaining clips as you will most likely destroy the old ones.

My 88 7.5 Gamefisher is basically the same as a 9.9 / 15HP of the same years, well as far as the ignition goes. I have a dead coil and was able to work the clip off without any damage, was fun as Frank said though. 2 standard screw drivers, 1 to lift the back of the clip up and the other to hold it up, then work the coil off.

I have an old sears gamefisher 9.9, 80s I believe. How hard is it to find parts for these motors?

Try to find a coil for an 88^ Force 7.5, 9.9, 15 HP :D It's 1 of the parts that's NLA. Seriously, look at a breakdown of your outboard (crowleymarine.com) and look at all the NLA parts, kind of scary...

I had a bent reed, NLA, took a couple hours of searching, but I found some. Now I need a coil and not finding anything, NLA! They do have an aftermarket CDI conversion kit,,, $150+

Re: how are the coils held on?

Lots of the ignition parts were made by WICO and there will be a number on the coil carrying plate. Now WICO is no longer in business but if you do some research starting with WICO, you will find a company out near Chicago that still manufactures magneto coils. Give them the wico number and they will tell you the make, model, and year of your engine and tell you what the coils cost.

I did it a while ago for an old West Bend engine. I didn't know what engine it was but they told me everything about it from the WICO number. And even though it was very old, they still had parts. Not cheap, but available. Unfortunately, I no longer remember the name of the company.

Re: how are the coils held on?

Good info right there ^^^

The coils for my 89 7.5 were made by Prestolite and I assume they are no longer being made since every source says NLA. I guess it might be worth a call to Prestolite to see, but I have a feeling they are no longer made. The coil is actually referred to as a BIM (?) since it does not fire off points.

Even if I could find a coil (BIM), chances are I'm still going to upgrade to the $150 aftermarket conversion as the last price on the coil was $94.
