How bad is this damage

We were away for the holiday. Today gale force winds got my boat.
One of the ties gave way causing the bow to hit the dock.
The rubrail on the front of the bow caught the dock as it came down, pulling the cap out of the hull.
Here are some photos.
It also hit under the dock as it came up several times causing cracks to the fiberglass and gelcoat.
All seems to be above water
Any idea how hard this is going to be to fix ?? and at what cost?

Re: How bad is this damage

I know to you it looks really bad just because it's your boat. From these pics to me it doesn't look bad. Just use a die grinder to grind it out, Fill and shoot.

Feel your pain, stuartboater. High winds yesterday and today is keeping me home for a few days. I would get beat up worse than the boat.

Good luck on your repair, if you need any assistance, let me know.

Thanks Sasto
We have it docked at the Harbor Inn.
Everyone took a beating there over the past days.
Its usually a well protected dock, but this wind is out of the norm and the waves are coming in to the dock, causing havock.
We had 3-4 ft waves on the intercoastal there every 10 to 15 seconds.
I registered winds at 50 to 55 mph on the portable weather station.
The long timers there say it was worse than many of the hurricaines.
There was a 40 footer there last night that turned over and sank in the slip.
I spent a good deal of time shoreing up other boats in the docks as well as many of the owners are out of town.
I am going to make a trip this am to survey the true damage in the light.
Thanks for the well wishes

I agree .. from the pics it doesnt look that bad at all.

If you get the rubrail off and take some more pics that would be great :) .

Been to The Deck over 100 times. The chef there is the best I know, if you know what I mean. Here on Nettles Island when the wind is out of the south we can take a beating too. I broke a cleat a couple weeks ago.

There are plenty of people around you with enough knowledge to help you out. Maybe see you around sometime.

Re: How bad is this damage

From the photos, you can see the structural damage. The cap of the boat has pulled off the hull and the fasteners have ripped through the fiberglass lip. However, even though it is structural damage, it is a small area and the integrity of the hull is not compromised.

SO: you probably need to remove the rubrail and base, reseat the cap, refasten it in a different set of holes, and reset the rubrail AFTER repairing the torn glass and chipped gelcoat. All in all not a very difficult repair, but time consuming. I suspect that although you only need a couple of dollars in repair materials if the rubrail does not need replacement and can be reused, a proper repair job done by a professional reputable glass man will cost more than 1000 because of the labor and time. You don't want to farm it out to any hacker--you will not be satisfied!

If you have any skills, and if you have the time and patience, doing it yourself would be the way to go.

I can tackle alot of projects but gelcoat and fiberglass is not something I can do so I think I may have to go to someone with better skills and tools than I.

If it were me I would get a quote from someone first. Then read through a bunch of the resto threads to see if it's something you're comfortable with compared to the quoted cost. I knew nothing about glassing or anything to do with hull repair. After reading through this site it's not that tough. A little scary at first but just practice on scrap. It only looks like a couple minor areas would need to be reglassed. The biggest "what if" would be how much of the rubrail and rivets/screws you would have to remove in order to get the cap to re-seat.

For the average boater this might be a huge undertaking. For a professional it would be a very routine fix.

Im starting to agree with you on this from the extra pics..

If it were a simple flat repair .. or on radi repair..then yea go for it..

But you have damage on technically multi radius repairs.

Can you shape wood ? .. can you glass and curve those multi radi back to shape ? .. Yes you can..but it would take a bit to learn how to thing..

So..$$...

2 hrs to refit your Rubrail
2 hrs to R@R your lights/vents ( shrink tube and everything )
2 hrs to grind out bad glass average ( up or down..not sure from the pics ).
4 hrs to cut glass and lam ( will take 2 lam times to fix ).
6 hrs to shape the glass ( on average again..some can do it faster..and some do it slower.. 6 is a good average ).
2 hrs to prep and mask off the repair area/boat ( this is high for some ).
2 hrs to spray ( have to account that we cant start something else till the spray is down and half cured ).
6 hrs to wetsand and polish/blend the gelcoat ( this is a high value if the prep/spray of gel was done correctly ).

26 hours at a pro rate of 80-90 bucks/hr is ( 26@85/hr ) = $2210.00 Just for Labor..not including materials which would be nominal @ 20% .. $400.00 for materials .. not including specialty hardware ( lights/vents or rubrail ).

3 grandolas...

So..got insurance ? if your going to a reputable place :) ..

Questions ? ..

Re: How bad is this damage

Three Grand?? IMHO this repair can be done easily by the boat owner for well under 1000.00. I used to work as a processor for Bayliner boats when I was just out of High School. All though just for a short time and some years ago this repair was one of routine that they were training the newbs on. Again not that difficult.

Re: How bad is this damage

Remember..3000 is Boatyard prices @ 85/hr.

Stuart can fix this for Way under that. The biggest expense will be the rubrail/hardware/gelcoat..not the glass and paper ;) .

The biggest thing your going to contend with is all the curves.

I'd pay for a quality estimate from a reputable shop and submit to insurance to see hat is covered.

I agree with Mark42, Get a quote from a reputable glass repair shop and than see if your insurance pays for the repair.
