Okay, that sounds about right. Then the advice in my second paragraph applies here:cool:

Thanks zeph,
I bought some champion plugs before I even got this far expecting the thing wouldnt even start, but it runs like a top in neutral, throttles way up until I put it in gear. I looked at some threads to save myself some embarrassament to no avail. Going to try the new plugs just want to make sure they are gappped correctly and will try and clean carb and the tank vent. The fuel line, and fuel is new. And I cleaned the tank so I thin I have eliminated fuel . Not sure about fuel pump though. Will advise after some adjustments

Hey Tim
Thanks for the info. Is 0.03 a good gap for the newer plugs?

Impeller/water pump works fine now. I have taken the carb apart and cleaned it thoroughly although there appeared to be none needed. Looked pristine to an amateur. Removed and checked the jets, removed the hose and blow threw everything. Did that so much I got scared Clinton might sneak up on me. Then I removed the fuel pump and hoses and it looked brand new. The screen was completely clean, all the gaskets and rubber pieces looked new. Blow out the hoses on it. Put new plugs in, fired it up and it is still bogging down with any more than about 1/3 throttle in gear. Had a guy who works for the local Bass Pro tell me it might be the stator. Probably gonna have to drop it off with him at his house. Any thoughts. Thanks for all the help, I'm not very confident with the electrical stuff.

Glad to hear you got the water pumping.
Hopefully he can help you get the rest figured out, but
since your motor is a rope start, it doesn't have a stator though.

cool, that eliminates another item from the list. After looking at the thread that has parts, I have at least figured out the motor is a 90 year or later. Also appears that the fuel pump is aftermarket, as it is not identical in shape to any of the original fuel pump housings. Is this a potential issue, considering it ran in neutral through all rpm ranges, but not in gear?

I have read on a few occassions on this site to give the primer bulb a few squeezes while in that bogged down state. That may tell you the fuel pump is not providing sufficient fuel. Maybe the reed valves are stuck.. depending on the style of reed valve otherwise it is timing.
