Re: how best to restore a 76 13' fiberglass scout?

We have been a little hesitant to recommend using the garage floor type epoxies for boats because we aren't sure they can handle the UV exposure.

Correct. Epoxy paint will not handle UV. I said, "I would think you could cover in epoxy resin to seal and then paint the surface with a good marine paint" but in truth, one could just use the marine paint to begin with. I was thinking epoxy resin in that it would "seal" all the exposed fibers better than just paint.

And the idea from Bonz with running the wiring through conduit (PVC) works great. If you can find the smaller diameter, you could also use plastic tubing which would probably be more flexible. I've used both with good results and added protection.

the problem with encasing the wires is that if you ever have a wire go bad you are pretty much SOL, can't pull a new one.

I see from the pictures that on either side there is a recessed area that looks like it also passes under the middle seat.. I would utilize that area with conduit, PVC or Sealtite. Would also look for a couple electrical boxes to mount to the front of the seats. That way you would have a place to mount switches and still have access to all connections.

Yep use the conduit for sure, you may have to replace a wire or you may want to add somthing in the future. The PVC conduit is cheap.

A really good paint I used on a 23 Angler Was A marine Paint Call MoPoxy (www.blpmobilpaint.com) workrd great and only 80.00 for a gallon with the reducer. Can be sprayed or brushed. It has great coverage and is a Epoxy paint. You will want to get their primer as well . Im gonna use the same paint on my 17 whaler and 23 cuddy.

This paint is rated for 7 years un touched in the Florida sun

If your gonna go the distance on ths rig and keep it on the cheap just think it out and do some pricing. There is no reason you can't use pvc for wiring from end of the rig to the other and fasten it before finishing it out for paint plus make it big enough for future assesories and use sealed boxes there cheap. I could se you finishing this thing out for under $200.00 counting painting the trailer. Just remember the finish product is only as good as the prep. Good luck

those two channels tend to fill with water over time. Unless I protect the wire somehow I dont really want to run one in them as it could fray/short out.

I have memories of trying to grab a small croaker and mud minnows my grandpa would drop from between that middle seat as it would swim down the channel under the seat lol.

Re: how best to restore a 76 13' fiberglass scout?

ok, havent had a chance to pick up the boat yet as the weather lately has had me dragging on a couple other projects I need to get finished.

I did stop by this past weekend to pick up my utility trailer and while I was there I picked up the two plastic gas tanks we have for it as well as the replacement engine.

turns out its a 15hp gamefisher engine model 225.581508. its got a weird round fuel adapter on it. anyone know what type of fitting this is so I can pick up the correct matching end for it for the tank as well since the fuel tank has the standard dual nipple type of fitting on it.

also, whats a good gas/oil ratio to use on this to get it running again since it has sat at least 9 years in the garage?

I'm going to go back outside in a few and pull the top cover off it and see if I can turn the flywheel by hand or not.

ok, it turns over very easily and the prop is free as well. just want to get it hooked up to some fuel and see if I can get it running.

I'm assuming since I dont see any outside wiring harness and it is pull start that I dont need to hook it up to a battery to get it running?

Correct.

Not sure about that fuel fitting you have there. I have never seen one like that before. If you don't get any info on it you can always change it out to some other version. There is really nothing special about them. Don't forget to hook up a water hose and muffs if you are starting it.

That's a Chrysler/Force fuel fitting. Connectors should be readily available. I actually like that fitting a lot better than the Johnson/Evrinrude ones. That's a Chrysler/Force 15HP and should be a good strong motor.

turns out its a 15hp gamefisher engine model 225.581508.

I ran your model number through the Sears Parts website and they stock the part BUT want $30.00 plus shipping for it. The host of this forum, iboats.com, has them at the online store for $4.37 plus shipping. I have a couple in my parts bin and they are described as: Chrysler/Sears/Eska/Bayliner/Force/Suzuki <75HP. You will be able to use 5/16inch I.D. fuel hose. Good luck!

Re: how best to restore a 76 13' fiberglass scout?

ok, so the suzuki ones are the same as the chrysler/force ones? I was at my local west marine at lunch and they had them in boxes as chyrsler/force and suzuki separately so I was scratching my head.
Most of my gas tanks and fuel lines I have are already set up for mercury fittings so I'm really thinking I may swap over to the mercury fitting setup on this engine just so I can use whatever I want that I have available without having to swap fittings here and there and possibly losing anything.

I posted the question in the force board and got some responses that echo'd my thoughts that I might need think about replacing the impeller due to age but ran into some issues while searching the iboats store, here's what I found and am sorta wondering about:

I went on sears website and looked up the parts on there as follows:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/par...s/Model-225581508/0247/1305320/10040944/00013

the impeller is part #47 which gives #436065-2.

I put that number into the iboats search engine and get the following impeller:
http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Ac..._category.f--searched.1--**********.638095441

I'm curious on how to read this as I'd rather see if a complete impeller replacement kit that would come with any gaskets/plates, etc is available instead?

is there a way to cross the sierra part number for this impeller (18-8903) into the search to see if there is a full kit available?

I mean I'm pretty sure this is the kit I need:
http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...&gd_poid=242678&gd_row=4&**********=638095441

as it crosses to the same engine parameters (15hp 74-97) that the impeller itself crosses to but not sure?

curious where in charleston you are located? I think you're about the 3rd other person from the area I've seen on here.

you wouldnt be willing to part with any of those fittings would you? lol. west marine wants to rape me without lube for them

oh yeah, this is one of the fittings on one of the two tanks that go with the jonboat. pretty sure its a johnson fitting but arent all the two nipple types interchangeable? they all look about the same to me...

oh and yeah the 78 15hp johnson does run but my grandpa has a 98 15hp mariner which I'm going to toss on instead.

So, the Mariner turned-out to be a Gamefisher. No worries because the experts here, which I am not, will help you through any issue. Don't give up on the 1978 Johnny. Some forum members would kill for it.

I am located in the West Ashley area and will help you anyway I can. Your thread interested me from the beginning since I am a grandfather and hope one or more of my grandchildren will continue my long-term waste of time and money with boats and outboard motors. Will send you a PM with my contact info.

West's will be pricey especially if it is a Moeller brand fitting. Seasense and Tempo have equivalent fittings at much lower prices and may even be available at Walmart. Retaining the OMC-style fitting on the tank end of the fuel hose should not be a problem as long as both tank fittings match.

yeah, turned out to be a gamefisher lol. I'm going to keep the johnson and rebuild it while using the gamefisher is all. the johnson is just SOOO hard to start and it shouldnt be. I'd like to rectify that while still being able to use the boat is all.

my neighbor has a port supply card but he "always forgets" to let me use it when I go to west marine sigh. and yeah, I just cant sit and watch this little boat sink into the ground anymore. I had too much fun on it as a kid. now that I have the time/money to do what I want with it. I can make it so much more than it used to be and still have loads of fun on it in the smaller creeks.
