how big of trolling motor do i need ?

i have a 20ft procraft bassboat with a 2.5 merc, it was a bank repo, and before the bank took it, the guy who had it, took off the trolling motor.so i will be buying one. i was wanting some imput on amount of thrust i will need. i am mostly going to be using it in the river oxbows and low current parts of the river.........thanks

A minimum of 70/80 lbs thrust for that boat. In this case bigger is better.

thanks bhile, i am currently looking at a clean used 82lb motorguide that i can get at a reasonable price.

Money aside, I would say get a stronger motor for a boat that size. If money is a factor, and it's a really good deal, go for it. It'll work.

i will never go back to a tiller or foot controlled motor. if you can, go remote wireless controls.

I'm with tashasdaddy on this one as far as a wireless unit is concerned. Went to a wireless this past spring and love it,as Ido a lot of trolling and just plane fishing by my self in some windy weather. With this unit I can control the boat from anywhere in it and when striper fishing it's a must.
