I have a 1989 Evinrude 150 XP
MODEL #TE150SLCEM
I suspect the VRO is bad
Boat will run only if I keep pushing in on the key intermitteley to choke
How do I go about disconnecting the VRO and run off a separate tank of pre mixed gas?

You need to do some troubleshooting to see if it actually is the VRO pump that is the problem. Check the pump output. Could be some blocked jets in the carbs. If you end up replacing the pump then either replace with an OMS pump or 2 regular premix pumps.

Sounds like carb problems to me.

well to see if its the carbs or the pump, test the engine after you do one or the other and see if the problem goes away...what is the problem anyways...or is this a preemtive strike on the vro.IMG107.jpgIMG106.jpg

Since engaging the primer solenoid keeps the engine running, there's a pretty good indication that you're engine is lean or sucking air (so rebuilding the carbs is a good place to start). If it were a fuel pump/fuel delivery problem you'd have to pump the bulb to help, so off the top of my head it doesn't sound like a fuel pump (VRO) issue.

Re: How can a 150 evinrude not on the VRO

I was thinking the fuel side of the pump wasn't working properly.
I thought this because it would run if I constantly hit the key in to apply choking
Because of my lack of knowledge I thought this meant I wasn't getting enough fuel
Is pumping this adding more fuel?
Or is it just opening the butterflies
Pardon my lack of knowledge.
Pumping the ball doesn't seem to keep it running
As always my buddies are sending me in different directions
I think the advice I get here will be more inline with working on this
Thanks for any advice you can give
I am new to all of this and don't have the cash for a boat mechanic to look at it

Pressing in the key energizes the primer solenoid. That's essentially an electrically operated valve that allows a little extra raw fuel to flow directly into the intake manifold, bypassing the carbs. Since this helps keep your engine running it's a good indication that your engine is running lean. This will normally be a symptom of carb issues.

IF the problem were fuel pump related you'd expect to see an improvement when you pump the bulb in your fuel line. Since that doesn't help it's probably not the fuel pump.

You said you've already ordered carb kits, so very thoroughly clean the carbs and put in the new kits and see if that helps.

+1 on carb cleaning. if pumping primer bulb doesn't help then must be the carbs.
