I have to replace my steering helm.
The thing is how do i know what type of helm do i get. The cable is Red i think it was replaced at some time but i dont know if its Teleflex or Ultraflex.
The boat is a 15 foot Dateline Bikini the engine is a Johnson Seahorse V4 85hp. i know that the steering helm has not been changed in the last 36 years.
If some one can help me identify either the helm or the cable that would be great.
Is there a difference in the two cables or can i get a steering helm that will fit both of them?
This may be a simple thing to do but for the life of me i can't figure this out

I am assuming you already checked the actual cable for any info labeled on it. Usually the manufacture engraves the cable length and type on the sheathing f the cable. So search the entire length and see what you find. If worst comes to worst, you can replace the entire steering assembly with whatever type you like. Just get the cable length right and all will work.

My 2 cents worth says if it's red , more than likely its a morse cable. Should be stamped with name and #s within a foot from either end. It'll be white stamped print so it may have faded. Morse quit making cables. Sea Star- Uflex_ Teleflex steering solutions are your options.Unless you can find used exact fit- and thats when the #s on the cable actually matter.(ALL INFO IVE PROVIDED HAS BEEN IN MY EXPERIENCE 1st HAND) Good luck.

Ayuh,.... That's why the best bet is to replace the cable, 'n helm as a kit,......

Replacement cables, 'n helms have changed over the last 36 years,...

Many of the old style stuff is no longer available,.....
