in lieu of a pic, which would be nice...

what's your est. year of the drive.

what color, white, black, etc.

usually most drives have a mfg. name on them. ie. mercruiser, omc, volvo-penta, etc.

most drives have a serial number too. on a mercruiser it'd be on the mercruiser tag, generally port side. the others i'm not familiar with location.

let us know what ya find...

That may not be the best way to tell. At the shop right now we have a white Mercruiser Bravo drive and a black Volvo 280.
Last summer someone brought in an OMC stringer drive....... You'll never guess. It was light blue to match the boat. That was ok, it was the orange prop that got me

wow, and orange prop. that sounds stylish. i just gotta have one of those. maybe not. repainting my drive lime green has crossed my mind though... not for too long though.....
it was a generic comment. i wasn't aware of the bravo or volvo 280 colors. but i'm aware of real old mercruisers being white. i was just hoping to get the op heading in some direction. most of the drives folks have on this forum seem to be the most popular colors that seem to be mfg specific. generally speaking.. ;)

agreed though. color is not a way to id the drive.

i have seen mercruiser outdrives that are painted white from the factory

it was a deal with sea ray so the drives were white with sea ray logos

i guess brunswick had a deal with...brunswick on that one??

i have also seen blue props on some drives, these are dealer props that are "given" to them for testing purposes

i do get a kick out of people who paint everything with bottom paint, including the anodes

Yes, there are some SeaRay boats with white paint on the outdrives, and it is factory.
But not on the one I was talking about. The one I was talking about is a commercial boat with white antifouling paint on it.

Here is part of a page from manual #6 that talks about the color.

That's an Alpha I gimbal though, right? The trim senders are on the hinge pins, where the pre-alphas used a different setup.

The later model MC-1 drives had the senders on the hinge pins also.

Thanks to all.
As I move on with my restoration, it was a great pass two days... rains, rains and sanding to remove old transom. Wow, this was a chore.
Here is the outcome.

You hopefully took a picture of it to share with the rest of us right?

YES. This was a gruelling piece of work. I come to really realize and to recognize those have gone through this. Reading the treads give an appearance that the tasks are easy to accomplish. Thanks to all. You are a great group of helpers and the help you give really goes a far way to encourage.
I would also like to know the following:

1. what type of layer of fiber (cut strand pieces or weve) should I add before glueing the ply transom?

2. Do I clean the surface prior to glassing, and if so what do I use as a cleaner?

3. How many layers of glass should I use?

4. Type of resin should be used?

Re: How can I identify the outdrive of my 1978 Glastron?

I built my transom by glassing 2 peices of 3/4" marineply together with a layer of matt and a generous amount of polyester resin.

I then used 2 layers of matt and even more resin to bond it to the boat.

If your transom has a curve, then you need to suspend the 2 ends on sawhorses and add weight to the middle while laminating the 2 peices together until you have the right amount of deflection.

While this forum is great for IO problems, your best bet would be to post the above types of questions over in the Boat Restoration, Building, and Hull Repair forum. The process has been detailed many times. Be sure to read the stickies in that forum also.

You can't move half a thread, you have to repost it. Just do a copy and paste of your posts.
