what I do is remove the flywheel nut, by a nut with the same thread and size then weld a shackle to this extra nut. spin it on the cranckshaft threads & lift.

The engine probably weighs around 300 lbs. It's somewhat difficult to handle due to it's configuration. You can rent a 3 legged automotive harmonic balancer puller. The 3 bolts will screw into the three tapped holes in the top of the flywheel. Make sure to tension the center screw. Use a strap or chain.

I have wrapped motorcycle/atv tie down straps around the motor, through the transom/steering bracket and hooked them to a pulley come-a-long and lifted one alone. I don't advise doing it alone.

Two people can normally slide a motor over to remove the steering cable and remove the motor and balance it...... then the motor can be laid on its back or placed on a stand. They are TOP HEAVY and awkward

If you are not familiar with rigging....It can be a daunting task...I would not try it with out someone with me that knows how to do it....
Do you know anybody with a forklift or a backhoe? you could tow the boat to them and with a couple rigging straps and a few minutes have it in the bed of the truck.........with out throwing out your back....or worse.

bought a cherry picker a couple of years ago for lifting and positioning old Big Twins. works well -- lifts 150+ lbs with ease, and should be the same with 300 lbs. In that load range, can use full extension/height adjustment. Believe cost was about $100 at Tractor Supply.

(wrapped chain and straps if no lift ring)

Found photo of solution on the web. Pm me if you need the URL

Worked good. Use grade 8 bolts. 5/16-24 thread. My bolts were shorter to snug the lift ring down tite to te flywheel nut

That transfers a lot of force to the crankshaft. I wonder if those lateral forces on the cs can have a negative impact?

I've always talked at least one of my uncles into helping me manhandle my motor onto my pickup bed. The prospect of free beer gets a lot of work done where I come from

When I've transported my motor in the bed of my truck, I've also placed an old tire down first and then rested the upper (engine block) end onto the tire. Easier to slide around to where you need it in the bed, and protects the various components that can be broken off.

attachment[1].jpgThe factory sells/recommends a 3-legged puller bolted to the flywheel for lifting-somewhat similar to the one pictured above. Theirs has a lifting eye cast into the large center screw of the lifter. (the 3 grade 8 bolts are not shown.) The one pictured by appelo is probably somewhat cheaper, can be either purchased or rented from a local auto parts store.

don't like to use the harmonic balancer for lifting (have one). Suppose it's OK if the bolts are screwed down tight on the flywheel, or as close as possible -- probably as done or recommended in the factory rig emdsapmgr shows. guess I would want to make sure the the bolts were short as possible with a good grip -- and still use a strap or chain for peace of mind.

(pic of the attached harmonic balancer looks scary to me for lifting -- could strip the threads)

I've used both, and the both will work safely. As long as you get the 3 bolts down into the flywheel far enough to engage the threads, that is a start. Also, you need to be sure to tension the 3 bolts evenly by tightening the center screw. Then use the strap. The only problem with using aftermarket bolts is that the threads may be too long. When the 3 bolts tighten in the flywheel, the screw ends will sometimes protrude through the backside of the flywheel too far and can damage (dig into) the stator ring which is immediately under those 3 screw holes. Just be careful.

My welder buddy cobbled this rig up for me. Used it several times, works great!

edit. It also doubles as a flywheel puller.

Enlighten me. How do you pull a flywheel with that if it's still tight on the crankshaft after just loosening the flywheel nut ??

Just loosen the flywheel nut a turn or two & tighten the bolts evenly til she pops. Sometimes you have to relieve the pressure & loosen the nut a lil more to get her to go all the way.

the crankshaft must butt up against the bottom of it? id be concerned about buggering up the end of the cs with a stubborn fw.

betcha you would screw the flywheel nut down on the top of the shaft a few turns and let the nut take any abuse. good idea do that with a puller anyway.

as a lifting ring, I wonder if V153's rig would be more secure if drilled to let the shaft and nut poke up through, and let the plate bolt down flush on the flywheel.
