A hull I have recently purchased has been repaired many times from the outside. The repairs look tatty and I'm not sure how good they are. I am also aware that the best repairs are done from the inside, but I would like to avoid cutting out the deck and reglassing if I get more nicks and scrapes in the future?

Good repairs can be made from the outside, but you have to have a peice of donner fiberglass to insert into the hole and glass to the inside. You have to have a big enough hole to put something inside to rough up the inside of the glass also. Its like a drywall repair kind of. Then when its dry, you grind and repair the outside. It will work great and will be stronger than original but it allways requires a larger repair that the original problem.

Making a piece of fibre glass is obviously not a problem, but if inserted into the hole, how do you hold it in place to glass it in? I suppose drill a couple of holes and clamp it in place from the outside? Then fill the holes when you do the second repair?

Drill 1/8 " hole in the peice you have made put a screw into the hole, clamp a vice grip on it, smear whatever product you are going to glue the patch in with where you want it, put it into the hole and stand there for three or four hours while it dries. :p No, really, have your drill handy and some more screws, and make some more holes through both peices and while holding with the vice grips. put the screws in to hold it untill it dries then take out the screws.

You must be gentle with me bassin fever, I find it hard to digest large amounts of info at a time so I tend to follow instructions one piece at a time. Sometimes I don't read the instructions fully before I start, lol. Long day that would've been!!!
