I am not sure about that cloth. I would think you should use a 1700 biax. I do not use epoxy so I can't tell you for sure. One of the other guys here will know. Also you can ask the people where you bought the epoxy from what to use.

Re: How can i repair the cut out i did in the side of the stringer?

also i was going to use the pieces i cut out for the backing, i wanted to see if i could use the corner section to place back under the repair area to create a backing with a corner so i can use that for the shape in doing the layup, i assume i would need to grind all gel coat off the cut out sections or not since it is epoxy going on to gel coat then cloth on that then epoxy , etc .....

Your just using your cutout for a mold .. You do not need to grind off the gelcoat ( I would scuff it with some 80 grit at most ).

ok Yacht, i got better resin, i got the 105 and 206 west system epoxy to do the repair areas, using epoxy resin, do i have to grind a large area around repair or just a few inches all the way around? Also do i have to use just 3 layers at a time to do the layup using epoxy resin? Thanks Bud

Can you return the WS epoxy and get some Vinylester resin ? .. VE resin would be very appropriate for this kind of repair .. ( Its a no no to gel over epoxy .. think about your next finish step in this regard ).

No matter what resin you use.. your grind out ( feather ) will be the same .. the layers will be the same.

You will use as many layers as needed to get the fill that you need after the grind/feather is done. I sometimes will put an extra layer of 1708 if the construction was too thin to begin with and inside lams are not .. erm.. cost efficient for the boat ..

the fiberglass i bought is evercoat sea glass fiberglass mat, says for poly and epoxy resin, also got evercoat fiberglass cloth , not good?

That stuff is crap .. get 1708 and mat .. that is all you will need for every repair imaginable for your boat .. ever ..

You can use poly lam resin .. VE resin ( recommended ) or epoxy .. the grind out is the same.. the lams are the same .. the only thing different would be the resin and cost ( Im looking in to the 1700 on 1700 thing with resin with west system support to be sure ).

gosh this is complicated, i read where epoxy is the strongest where you need strength, can i use the epoxy and all chopped strand for the stringer repair? I thought for the stringer i was going to use the cut outs for backing and fill in the entire hole area.

The bilge pump mounting area had woven roving with a layer or two of chopped strand matt on top then gel coat

ok if i return the west system epoxy resin and go with your original plan yacht on the polyester, the stuff i got from home depot was 3M fiberglass resin, unsaturated polyester polymer waterproof non-shrinking, says durable bond for boats, is this stuff oh or the same as the polyester resin people are referring to?

Nope, The HD resin is CRAP!!!!! You need to by quality resin/mat/cloth from a good supplier.
www.uscomposites.com is as good as it gets. There are no suppliers in PA that I am aware of but you could check with local body shops and marinas to see where they get their supplies. If you go with USC I'd recommend their 435 Poly resin and 1.5oz CSM and 1708 Biax mat.

ok thanks woodon, any special other specifics on the matt, cloth, or resin before i buy? wish i heard all the specifics before i rn around and got all the "quality" poly resin, quality mat, and quality cloth before ....

Appreciate the fact ur letting me know now though before i do the job as well and have to re-do...

As far as the prep work since the stringer area is 1/4 " thick and looks like all csm (will now when i grind down my cut out) is grinding that area about 3" all around using acetone then rsin, csm, etc and using the cloth length wise is same length strips good?

Re: How can i repair the cut out i did in the side of the stringer?

ok woodon, i got the cloth you suggested and the resin that yacht suggested, (the vinylester)

What i found todat was when i went to slowly pull the top part off of the "stringer section" if that is what it is there is wood just under the 1/4" thick fiberglass top part i cut, the wood is about 1/2" thick it looks like, it covers about 2/3 of the top area so i ended up cutting 2/3 of it. Now it's a "flap" i can pull down where i could see that there is wood in there, what would be the best way to repair this? Could i "paint" in the cut area epoxy resin to soak in the wood and seal strong and then grind around this area and place lams of glass in or pull out the part completely and back the bottom of the top area and make that top piece i cut out all fiberglass layup?

Thanks.

Re: How can i repair the cut out i did in the side of the stringer?

is it possible that the 1/2" thick wood that is glassed ont he top part of that section is there for mounting the battery platform?

To explain better, that rib is 1/4" thick fiberglass uner that 1'2" thick wood, under that foam is stuck to the botom side of the wood, the rest of the section is hollow. I checked the taller stringer sections from the bilge through the drain holes, the stringers are hollow so i believe they are all fiberglass and hollow ( a one piece molded system) Just not sure how to do the repair now since there is wood under the fibeglass, would i be correct in just taking out that whole piece that is left , and just glassing it back in without the wood in that 4 " long section?

That's and Interesting picture of how your boat is made.
Would you please post some more pics of the area you are working on.. Both close and a little farther back so I can get a better perspective of the overall project?

hey wood, the picture i have in post # 13 is the overall area, the "actual stringers" what i believe are the actual stringers are just forward , closer to you looking at the pic in post # 13 are about 4" taller than the area i cut and are that height ruunning all the way forward to the front of the boat. That part you can see in the other picture i posted of the blue and white boat that's exactly like mine. If i take a further back picture it would just show the lid you open to get to the gas tanks and battery compartment.

Re: How can i repair the cut out i did in the side of the stringer?

Here's the actual patent !!! the description of the grillage system and hull design. Like i said , the red area in the old picture you see is the entire all fiberglass hollow grillage area, apparently with wood on top for wood deck mounting etc? I can't take a picture that will show it any clearer. From what i can tell that wood i found isnt a critical reinforcement, as you can read in the patent, so i'm just gonna grind to the wood on the area i cut and grind down the areas i didnt and lam in cloth and resin, gotta be a lot stronger than any wood.

Re: How can i repair the cut out i did in the side of the stringer?

ok wood, one more question, the area i cut is held by about a 1/8" of the wood where foam is under the wood, i can push that resctagle area down as if it were on a hinge, what is the best thing to use to put in the cracks to ahere the wood to the wood again, i have 3m 5200 it says its strong for wood to wood and wood to glass ahesions, i also have permatex 1 minute epoxy, i was going to push the "flap " down and put in something to let the wood bond on the long side, then cut the crack open a little more and bond the shorter ends, then when that is cured, grind down the glass almost to the wood and do the layup, any advise you can give on the layup would be greatly appreciated, not sure if i should use smaller pieces of glass cloth then bigger as the area will be like a bowl and to build it up flat again.

Thanks.

Re: How can i repair the cut out i did in the side of the stringer?

Again your plan sounds good. Personally I'd use the 5 or 10 min epoxy.
As for the layup I would use "Torn" pieces of 1.5 oz CSM, and as you say get progressively larger. After two layers of CSM I would then lay a piece of 1708 biax and then two more CSM. That shoud get you close to flush. I would then use 3M Premium Marine filler to fair everything in. Final sand and either gelcoat or paint. DONE!!!!

Re: How can i repair the cut out i did in the side of the stringer?

ok thanks wood, i think i read where if you use epoxy you should only use 3 layers of cloth at a time due to the heat build up, i'm using csm, csm 1708 biax, cm, and csm as you suggested with vinylester resin, can i do all layers of the build up in one shot using the vinylester?

Thanks
