I bought a boat with a single binnacle control , i am used to the ones with the push button to put it in neutral where i can rev it up a little to warm up. How will i do that with this control, it just seems to go into gear and rev.

A picture of your control would help.
My '85 has a lever near the bottom of the control. Pull it up to increase the RPM's.

Either there is a lift lever at the rear of the remote, or their is a push button to disengage the shifter when you only want to run the throttle. Not rocket science. Investigate.

On mine you pull the shifter away from the box, sideways. This disengages the gear cable. Grab it at the pivot point and try pulling it out then move it fwd.
