Just got this motor, and its electrohydro shift,,,, found a way to rig a toggle switch to make it shift etc etc because I dont have original controls, but throttle and steering is hooked up, I have the positive and negative coming out, and a wiring harness with 10 wires from it, all colored,,, how can I make this start with a toggle switch like ignition? its a 1968 Johnson 55hp,

also they say electrohydro is different lower unit oil then normal is this true ? Thanks!! pictures below ,

It would be easier to put in an ignition switch, which would handle the On, Start, Stop and Choke functions all in one neat package.

I'd use this for the shifter if I was "rigging" it:

In all of the way for forward, one click out for neutral, all the way out for reverse.

Yes, the hydroelectric shift uses a different gear oil called Type C lubricant. It is thinner than normal stuff.

You can dash mount a stock ignition switch. What you need to wire it correctly, is a wiring diagram for your motor.

Your shift system can be operated with a push/pull type, three position nav/anchor light switch. This type of switch leaves two circuits open in the full forward position, one circuit closed in the middle position and two circuits closed in the aft position. That is the same sequence required for your shift system.

While this works, there is a mjor caution that has to be offered. If you accidentally shift your engine, with anything much above idle rpm, you may damage it severely.

Ok I can most likely figure that out but how can I rig up the ignition wire colors etc ? Idk how and isn't there a wire that is a vaccum that needs to be hooked up to ?

Wire that is a vacuum? Do you mean for a vacuum cutout switch?

i dont know, i wish I had a wiring diagram, basically those 10 wires, I thought I heard that one of them was for a vaccuum and that had to be constantly on for it to shift? is this incorrect? I wasn't sure I heard on the 68-71 or 72 or whatever had a vaccuum line that always had to be hot, correct me if I am wrong, but I don't know I think I am going to order that oil and the switch and the ignition switch as well I found a wiring diagram for a old 40 hp I believe that is the same year and everything but I do not understand it at all, I have just the 10 wires and that one harness if someone can guide me with whats what I would be able to probably figure it out so I can rig up this ignition switch that I will buy for the 16 bucks and also the 3 way push switch thing,,,, thanks everyone!!!

ok just got of the phone with a parts dealer, tomorow I am going to pickup universal 5 terminal switch with key, and quart of type c, with pump, and a 3 way push pull switch for around 50 bucks.... that should be everything to basically get me on my way correct?

It would be the minimum to possibly get you on your way. Do you know if the motor actually runs or shifts? You can hook up the battery and jump the starter solenoid to see if it at least starts up when hooked to a water hose or in a barrel. Spark and compression tests can also be run without completely wiring it up.

You are guessing at your setup. My advice is to do nothing, until you get your hands on a proper wiring diagram. Failure to do so, could result in damage to your motor.
