Hello all. This is my first of many post to come.
I just bought an old boat to restore with a 1967 Mercury 650. The serial number begins with 2166___. It has been kept in a garage for a long time I was told since 1980.
How can I tell which model 650 I have? 650S, 650SL, 650E, 650EL ?

Since the motor has not been used in a long time what should I replace to get it started or working? Hoses, fuel lines, distributor, spark plugs, etc?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I have been looking around and have not found the information I need to know so I can begin working on the engine.

1967 & 68 Merc 650's were produced as
Merc 650S (Electric Starting, Short Shaft, without Alternator)
Merc 650SL (Electric Starting, Long Shaft, without Alternator)
Merc 650E (Electric Starting, Short Shaft, with Alternator)
Merc 650EL (Electric Starting, Long Shaft, with Alternator).

It should be very simple for you to tell your model number by looking at two things:
1 - Does it have a long or short shaft? (measure from where the engine sits on the transom to the A/V plate above the prop).

2 - Does it have an alternator?

The only thing I'm a little uncertain of is the alternator thing. I'm thinking that the "E" models have a distinctive/ conventional looking alternator attached to the engine, while the "S" have a charging system run by a stator under the flywheel? Maybe someone else can answer that.

As for what to do, in the FAQ's somewhere there's one on waking a sleeping outboard.

I grew up with a 67 (or maybe a year or two earlier) 65 hp! Many nice memories.

Well after talking to a few marine mechanics around town I was confident with attempting to start the motor, hopefully.
Attached the gas line, new gas & oil, attached the throttle cables, used my car battery and to my surprizethe darn outboard started on the first try.
I have figured out I have a Long Shaft motor but not sure what or how the alternator looks. So on this note I am still stuck, but not for long. I am determined to get is working properly even if I have to spend a little $.

I can't tell you what that alternator would look like except since none of my outboards have an alternator (they all have stators), I'd be confident I'd be able to tell if there was one on there. But, why not just ask the guy who you talked to what it would look like and see if it's there?

Mystery solved. I have a Mercury 650 SL

Thank you for your advice and help.

Now on to checking compression and all the other things to make it a turnkey start and dare I say field test. I can only hope so.

Great. The fun part is the field test. Nothing like being on the water with a new (to you) engine that runs well.
