I have a 72 50hp evinrude and I am getting no spark to my spark plugs. I replaced the stator and power pack, how could i test my coils and cilinoids for this stuff. Like how could i test rectifier, coils, basically all the cilnoids. i have look for broken wires and i have given myself a headache. help me please.

My manual has all the test procedures you mentioned . You really need to get a manual, for some tests it requires certain equiptment. There are resistance tests for the coils, but I dont know what the values would be for your engine, and dont want to give you the wrong info. If you do a search, I read some info. on these tests somwhere , just cant remember where, they're in the archives.

Re: HOw Can I test???

First test to do if you are not getting spark on any of the cylinders is the kill circuit. Find the connection on your power pack that is the kill wire ( black wire with a yellow tracer ). If the motor sparks with this disconnected then there is a problem with the kill circuit in your controller? (possibly missing the lanyard clip to hold the kill switch open???)

I can give you all the tests for coils, etc if you need them just let me know.

i tried what you said about removing the black nd yellow wire from the power pack. still no spark. if you would not mind please i would like the tests. thanks

Re: HOw Can I test???

You've replaced the power pack and stator and still have this problem. Have you replaced the rectifier? If not I would replace those along with the spark plug boots to protect and lengthen the life of your new power pack. Those parts will cost less then 1/3 the price of your power pack alone.

All the tests require a multimeter, some will require a 10 Ohm, 10 Watt resister as well.

With the motor not turning:

(test for coil resistance)
If you have a multimeter (ohmmeter) connect one lead to any of the 4 coil output terminals on the power pack and with the other test for resistance at each one of the spark plug connectors. A good coil will measure about 2K Ohm in resistance. A bad coil will be considerably higher. With a higher reading the coil may still spark (weakly)causing the motor to idle rough, dog out, and not reach top end. This will eventually feed back into your power pack and burn it up as well.

(test for timer base resistance)
Check the timer bases resistance from the black/white wire to the white/black wire. Reading should be 10-20 ohms.

While turning the motor over [must be turning at least 250 RPM]:

(Check Timer base DVA output and voltage)
** DVA readings require a peak reading multimeter. If you do not have one use a 10 Ohm 10 Watt resister in series with your meter.
1- Check the DVA output from the timer base. A reading of at least 0.5V or more from the black/white wire to the white/black (while connected to the pack) is needed to fire the pack. If the output is low, you may try to reset the air gap between the timer base sensor and the triggering magnet.
2- Check the DVA voltage on each trigger wire to engine ground. You should have a reading of at least 150V or more from the black/white wire and the white/black wire to engine ground (while connected to the pack). If the reading is low, disconnect the trigger wires from the pack and recheck the terminals on the pack. If the voltage jumps up to an acceptable reading, the timer base may have a problem in the internal wiring (A thin spot in the insulation on one wire).

Re: HOw Can I test???

Just an editorial note: The coil test was orignially written for a 4 cylinder engine. There will only be 2 coil outputs on your pack. The rest of the info should be accurate.

Rectifier testing can be done with only an ohm meter. Search this forum for rectifier testing

Ramona, you need to get a shop manual ... this board is NOT a substitute for a shop manual.

Re: HOw Can I test???

kevin88 i ran the tests above. my rectifier is good. well my timer base puts out 100 not 150. now if i disconnect them from the power pack and check the teminals on the pack itself they also test at 100 steady. when i fist turn the motor over both test jump to 150-200 then at a steady pace of 100. thanks for the information my manual did not have that in there. thanks

Pull the flywheel, and maybe the stator.Look at the sensor/timer base.Loosen the phillips screws holding the sensors in place, and gently 'pry' the sensors towards the crankshaft, then retighten the screws.
I got this from an OMC Tech Rep years ago.I called them because sensor readings were okay.
Worth a try !

DHP

Re: HOw Can I test???

well thanks for the help DHOMARINE. i tested my timer base and it is not putting out enough to fire the spark plugs. i tried what you told me and thanks for the info. it did make the time base draw a little more volts but not enough.
