How can you tell what model and make of stringer drive you have?

Hello, I just purchased a 1971 Reinell 2450 with a stringer sticking out the back and need to replace the boot. My question is how do you tell what motor and out drive you have, the owner didn't know, he just drove it till it started having issues. Now it is my new big project boat.

Welcome to iboats Reine11
First thing we will do is move this over to the OMC forum, stringer drives are not Mercruiser.

Sorry for the placement of the post, as you can tell i have now clue what i have. This is my first early reinell and the owner gave me nothing not even info on what was in this boat. But I did get it for a steal.

Let's hope it stays that way and doesn't turn into "I got ripped off". Old boats are seldom the bargin you thought they were.

Here is a picture of a Merc. and a Stringer drive. which one is most like yours?

and need to replace the boot. My question is how do you tell what motor and out drive you have,

Ayuh,... Count the number of screws holdin' the boot on, 'n replace with the same screws count boot...

A '71 is probably an electric shift...

You probably have a '71 Electric Shift, much like mine ('72):

That boot is THIS one (I think - haven't had to change mine yet, but the screw count and years are right).

Good times - that thing is a monster! Hope the stringer doesn't give you too much trouble.

You're definitely electric shift, I can see the cables in the second photo. Your exhaust housing is a little different than mine, so probably a '70 or '71. You can find the serial number on the drive and figure it out with a quick Google search. NWRedneck has a great post of general information on the stringers here.

Your tilt motor is also disconnected from the looks of the first photo. You may want to service that tilt motor and gears while you've got the boot apart. The boot should be pretty easy to replace once you pull the outdrive. There's a clamp on the inside of the boot at the intermediate housing, and then the screws around the transom. Count your screw heads and commence to orderin'.

Can't wait to see some pictures inside the boat.

Oh it needs work but here is what is in it, small kitchen with stove top and sink. it has a small bathroom and a dinet that flips down to make a bed just like a RV and a bed area in the very front. When standing in the boat the edge is at my top most rib area and I am 6' tall. It takes a ladder to get in and to get out lol oh and it has a refrigerato also. It looks like a the motor is a V-8 but I will get picks tonight when I get off work. I am the master of my universe, thats right I am a master RVIA/RVDA tech and a Master ASE automotive tech and this boat will bend to my will. It will succomb to the dark side.

your missing the bronze gear that bolts to the stringer. That gear meshes with the pinion gear, without it you can not raise the drive up.
also the drive will freely kick up when backing up, so you will need to get a bronze gear.
