I have people say that you can turn an inboard/out over by hand to be able to tell if the motor is locked up? I know there are other ways to find out if there is engine issue's, but I have never known how to do the "turn over by hand". Do you put the boat in drive, then turn the prop? Thanks for the help, BTW this isn't for my motor more for my own knowledge.

After you Remove the Sparkplugs,... A Wrench is used on a Bolt on the Crankshaft, or Wherever Possible.....

or Wherever Possible.....

my wherever possible was a strap wrench on the crank pully. my ft. motor mount is very close to my pully w/ no access to the front of it to go get the bolt.

Problem with doing it on the crank pulley is that if it is a harmonic balancer, you could ruin it.

good point bruce. thanks for makein sure i didn't give someone a bum idea..... on my L6. my balancer is only pressed on. i doesn't have a nut holding the balancer on to the crank. stickly pressed on. since i don't have a balancer nut and even if i did you couldn't get to it for the ft. motor mount. how would you suggest i turn my engine over then. if i can't do it via the balancer it self? i thought i was being creative with the strap wrench. but apperently not creative enough.......guess my new idea would be to thread some short screws into the balancer removal screwhoes. then use a long screwdriver to rotate it useing two of the three balancer screw hoes. if i have the room to install bolts in them screwholes. which w/o going to look i aint conviced i have that kinda room....

one question always brings up another it seems........

Not really confusing...if you use a strap wrench on the harmonic balancer you run the risk of rotating it on the crankshaft. If you remove the spark plugs, even the smallest 3/8 drive breaker bar with a socket on the nut that holds the balancer on will turn it over. The key is removing the sparkplugs and not fighting the compression...the rest is easy...

While I Don't really see the validity of your concerns,....
Mostly because, IF the Balancer Shifts,.....
It's probably weakened,+ on it's way out anyways.....

With the Plugs out,... It doesn't take alot of Torque to turn a motor,.....
If you're pulling Hard enough to Slide a Balancer,.... Something is Wrong......
That kind of Pressure can Strip that big Bolt that some of us use.....

Another Idea,......
By over- tightening the Belts,...
I've used the Alt., or the P/S Pump, or even the Waterpump Snout to turn a motor over,.....
With the Plugs Out of course......
