I have a 14 foot craft and I pick up an 15 horse motor for it but its a long shaft motor and it seem to set to deep in the water..(boat wont plain out ) so I made the back of my boat 3in taller and the boat plain a lot better but dont seem to plain out like I think it should I had an older 10 horse on it befor and it plain out better and ran faster.. were should the motor sit for hight and were should the prop sit for depth? I have messed with the pitch of the motor and thats not helped ...much

Should of never sold the 10 horse!!!!!

Hello Dr

I would raise it up another 2 inches and see how it does. You have a long shaft motor (20") on a hull designed for a short shaft (15"). Cavitation plate should be even or slightly above the bottom of the hull at the transom for starters...

you will need a jack plate, or a home made version. friend took 4 pieces of 1 1/2 inch aluminum angle (home depot) bolted them thru the transom on each side of the motor (2 outside 2 inside) and let them extend up about 4 inches. then he sandwiched and bolted a transom extention (just Wood), it worked great for him. it was nothing fancy just servicable.

forgot when you thur bolt make sure to use a good sealant on the bolts. no need to rot a transom.

Another thing you could look for is a kicker bracket rated for the weight of your engine.
A 15 HP 2 stroke is not all that heavy. You can bolt those on pretty easily and then you'd have some adjustment to play with. The good heavy duty ones, new, are not cheap, but it might be a good way to go especially if you can find a used one. Aside from cost, another down side is that you may or may not want to transport the boat with the engine on that kicker bracket. But puttting it on and off isn't that big of a deal with an engine that size. Good luck. I'd be curious to hear after you get it set up - whether it's faster or stronger than your old 10 hp.

You can always try to remove the extra link on the motor that makes it a long shaft .....

personally, i'd rather raise the motor, as most newer boats are built for the long shaft. thus making a change to a new boat easier. long shafts are also more popular on resale.
