In a previous thread I asked if I should change my water pump impeller and the collective opinion is that I should.

I have limited outboard experience but I have done the job on an old 66 Johnson 80hp. I have every tool going since I work on cars so thats not a problem.

How long does this job normally take? Any hints?

The job on your own outboard takes as long as it needs to take. (That is, one of the trade-offs of DIY work is the delays and false starts, particularly the first time through a procedure.) If you could handle the 80hp, you can handle a similarly large motor. You need a manual for your model, if you don't already have one in that toolbox.

Hey -- Good luck!

I don't yet have a manual, I will be ordering one soon. I was just looking for a typical number of hours for this job. On the old Johnson I was also doing head gaskets, carb rebuild, and distributor repairs plus repairing the Electro-Matic shift springs which had broken, those were fun.

Well I got my manual and plunged in to the job. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the job only took me 2 hours including complete replacement of the pump and lower unit seal. My only previous experience had been on an old 66 Johnson and the water pipe in those is ridiculous to reconnect. The Mariner job was nice and quick.
