I'm looking to buy a boat very cheap but it has a major cooling problem. The current owner replaced the lower unit water pump but didn't put any anti-freeze back in the cooling system. Over the winter the water froze and blew out a seal on long cylinder that runs along the lower portion of the motor and cracked the reservior where the coolant cap is located.

How hard would it be to replace these pieces and what are the chances of some internal damage that can't be seen?

I had that same motor in a 21' Grady White. I had to upgrade the "long cylinder" you refer to (which is the heat exchanger) to a 4". Those engines are notorious for overheating problems- it has a lot to do with the aluminum block and cast head (why they are stock fresh water cooled).
I would be very careful as to what you get yourself into- a repower may be the best solution if your really like the hull.
