I'm told I need to adjust my shift linkage to possibly cure a popping in and out of reverse problem and that the procedure to follow is:

1. Put shift/throttle control in neutral.

2. Disconnect the shift cable (question: disconnect it where?)

3. Shift unit into reverse (how do I physicall do this? And, how do I know when it's in reverse?)

4. Re-attach cable.

I'm not knowledgeable in this, so help will be appreciated.

Remove the engine cover. Have someone move the throttle/shift lever while you look at the two cables at the engine. The first cable to move is the shift cable. That's the one that needs adjustting. Put the throttle/shift lever in neutral. Disconnect the end of the cable at the engine. The linkage the cable connects to is the mechanical linkage that operates the shift linkage in the lower unit. Move that linkage forward, then fully backward, then forward again one click. Spin the prop to make sure its in neutral. If you can't turn the prop its not in neutral. Now bring the end of the cable back up to the shift linkage. Don't push or pull on anything in an attempt to line up the attachment points. If the attachment points don't line up exactly adjust the trunion (the threaded plastic barrel on the shift cable) until the two points line up EXACTLY. Attach them. If this adjustment does not solve the problem, the lower unit needs attention. By your own admission, this is not a job you should do yourself -- especially if you don't have a service manual specific to your engine..
