How do I change the oil in my motor. At the bottom there are 2 screws which the guy I got it from told me is where the oil goes. He told me what to do but I should have wrote it down cause i'll be damned if I can remember. Can anyone walk me thru the steps to changing the oil? ITs a 1958 Johnson seahorse 18hp.

Thank you,

-Jay

Hi,
You need to take out the upper vent screw first, then take out the lower screw and the oil will drain out. Make sure the oil isnt milky (water in the leg) and that it doesn't have and metal peices in it. Now press the new oil container to the lower hole and sqeeze the container until the leg fills with oil and some comes out of the upper vent screw, then replace the lower and upper screws and you're done. Make sure when you don't let any pressure off the oil container until it's away from the hole or it will suck the oil back in from the leg.

Make sure you replace the fill and drain plug seals. They're cheap.

You can get the sealers from your local Johnny/Rude dealer. Get a few since you need to replace them every time you change the L/U oil. You need the nylon ones.

Your engine takes OMC (now BRP) 'HiVis' lower unit oil available from the dealer. Or you can use an alternative outboard gearcase oil from Walmart or other places that sell boating supplies. You need SAE 90W outboard gearcase oil (this is a little different from 'gear oil' used on autos). 75W stuff that might be sold along side it is too thin for those older single seal gearcases.
A lot of those sort of places sell a cheap little pump that fits on the oil bottle. It works much better and much less messely (is that a word??) than the 'squeeze' method. It's worth looking out for - you only need to do the 'squeeze' method a couple times before it gets really old.

Hope this helps!

After the oil starts coming out the upper (vent) hole, replace the upper hole screw before you remove the bottle from the lower (fill) hole. Finger tight is OK, you will tighten it a little more in a minute. This way when you remove the bottle from the lower hole the oil won't all run out before you get the lower screw plug in. Plugging that top hole first makes a vaccuum so the oil can't leak out the bottom very fast. Less messely is always gooder. Tighten both plugs enough to seat.
PS Use the right size srewdriver. Mushed up slots on the fill/vent plugs look like some amateur changed the oil and show disrespect for these great old outboards. You will fall in love with that 18HP!
