How do I check for voltage at key switch on M50D Tohastu? Schematic?

The engine won't turn over.
The neutral switch in the control box works ok.
I can jump the starter and the motor runs ok.
A new key switch didn't help.

Are the male red and female green wires at the control box where the 12volts come through? If I want to bypass the harness do I run a jumper wire from the battery to the solenoid, small tab without the ground?

My schematic isn't much help. Is there one posted somewhere? Thanks.

Red is +12v. Yes, the small lead on the solenoid is the trigger terminal. But there is more, such as the Blue lead triggers the choke solenoid. Full info, including wiring diagram is in the Factory service manual, available from any dealer, including me.

When I get the motor running I'm going to sell it and go back to my 8hp. Much simpler and cheaper, so I'd rather not spend $50 on a manual just yet.

I traced and checked the red wire from the control box back to the CD box, then the two red wires going to the solenoid from the CD box over to the solenoid. These wires including the positive battery cable showed continuity. So it might be something in that box that isn't letting the 12 volts go through.

The control color codes will be the same for all Tohatsu/Nissan motors, including an 8/9.8; But... the 2-stroke 8 is covered by a different service manual than the 3-cylinder 50. You could consider the manual a "value added" item when you sell the motor, OR... you could get the manual for the 8 (assuming it's a 2-stroke), and the wiring diagram would be almost identical, except for the ignition components. Still, you either need to review the wiring diagram or create one on your own, in order to troubleshoot efficiently.

The online manual had a schematic but I've seen better. Not sure what I did but it cranked today. The choke wouldn't work with the old switch so on with the new. The wire pattern is different but the guy who sold me the switch offered to help so I sent him some pictures. Things are looking up.

My 8 is an Evinrude, guess I should have mentioned that. Tohatsu's are good motors but parts cost twice as much. Still going to sell it if I can, since boats don't seem to be selling. It sits in the garage 360 days a year here in Illinois.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: How do I check for voltage at key switch on M50D Tohastu? Schematic?

My schematic shows that the red wire next to the green wire on the neutral switch is supposed to hook up with the trim switch on the throttle handle. Trouble is they are both male connectors. The red key switch wire will operate the trim switch. That leaves the red wire on the NS with no place to go. It seems to do it's job the way it is. Is this acceptable? Thanks.

Trim/Tilt should be sky blue/pink (sB/P). What schematic are you using? The red (adjacent to green at the switch) feeds the buzzer and tilt power. The Neutral safety sw intercepts those wires to disable buzz in neutral.

Lets see, one page says F EF EFO EFTo and the other says EPO and EPTO.

One shows red and pink going to the trim switch. I broke the neutral switch by tightening too much and got so disgusted with it and some other things I had to quit for now. I wasn't cut out to fix things.

This may help: F is tiller steered; P is remote steered; E is for electric start, T is for tilt, and O is for automatic oil mixing.
