How do I check registration/history on a used engine?

I just bought a 50 hp Mariner outboard 1982 model.<br />The fella I bought it from did not have a registration with it. he sold it to me as is. It runs great but im an honest person that has this weighing on my mind. How do I go about checking the serial # to find out if it stolen or not? can anyone help me here?<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Suzuki40

suzuki40 <br /><br /> I don't think most states track outboard engine serial numbers any more than they track ..say... refrigerators. <br /><br />Even most small boats didn't require manufacturer's serial numbers until 1979.<br /><br />Now if it were a handgun, thats a different story.<br /><br />It's hard to shoot someone with an outboard!!!<br /><br />I've often heard that theft of outboards is a big problem, and I guess it is a daunting task for state governments to track them.<br /><br />Did this guy wear a long overcoat and also ask you if you wanted to buy a watch? In the backward, redneck state of Texas outboard engines are titled, just like cars and boats. Woe be unto someone using, possessing or selling one without clear title.<br /><br />Seems like a good idea.

Suzuki40,<br /><br />As you are seeing, most states do not track outboards.<br /><br />If the model and serial number tag is still on it, everything is probably legit.

I read recently, that only 6 states title outboards.<br /><br />I checked with my insurance company to see if there was an industry info clearing house for stolen property, specifically boat/motors. They told me no.

What you are honest? So what its an old outboard he pic ed up from someone? Not really worth alot of money either. Now if it was a 2002 honda 115 then yeah I would worry about it.
