How do I determine if my engine is EFI?

I just bought the boat and thought it was EFI but after a hard run, it diesels after shutdown...I didn't think fuel injected motors would do this?

I have a '99 Monterey 242 with a Mercruiser 5.7L and an Alpha One drive.

I am open to suggestions...and yes, I have reviewed the documents but they are vague and don't say specifically what the exact motor is.

I looked at the engine and it is difficult for me to tell...so is there something tell-tale which will indicate a carb or fuel injected motor?

Sorry if this sounds silly...

Thanks

A carb would have a fuel line to it,
throttle body injection would have a fuel feed and fuel return lines
EFI has a injector for each cylinder mounted right in the intake manifold and fed by a fuel rail.

when you pull the cover back there should be a little plastic cover on top telling you exactly what it is....

or.... post your engine serial number here and we'll tell you :)

I think the plastic cover says Mercruiser 5.7L but not EFI...

So here is my engine SN# OL326643

Also, I assume EFI means throttle body injected?

Bubba1235, you stated fuel injected engines will diesel if they have a leaky injector...would that be true with a TBI engine (assuming mine is TBI and EFI = BI)? It could be the boat had some bad gas or old gas...seems less prevalent now that I have run it a few times...you guys have any recommendations for a good fuel injection cleaner to add to the fuel?

Thanks for the input, guys...

It's carbed.

Don,

Did you determine it was carbed by the SN?

Thanks...

Yes, but there is nothing in the SN that indicates one or the other.

I already told you, it's a carbed engine. I can tell by serial number using an old dealers program (when I worked for a Mercruiser dealer)

I was just confused by all the chatter...and you stated there was nothing in the SN which showed it as one or the other...

OK, thanks for the info...I appreciate you researching it for me...:)

First of all, you might start a new topic, rather than jumping on one that has been dead for twelve years... you'll be more likely to get help and you won't be running afoul of forum rules re: posting on threads inactive for more than 90 days...
