How do I get inside my inline 6?

So I've got my '74 1500 laying on my workbench. I want to crack it open to see how bad the internals look. I want to remove the plate on the back of the motor that the carbs attach to. Do I have to remove the flywheel to get that off?

To do it right yes.. You REALLY need the manual.

-W

Get a manual first...... Sit on the throne and read it well. The straight six's are not designed for inspection...thats for sure. You have to split the case, then pull the crank, then rod.piston.then you can see what the cylinder looks like. Get the manual and Good luck.........

Re: How do I get inside my inline 6?

I've got a manual from the '70s, although it is not very helpful. I can figure most of it out myself...while I still don't know too much about outboards I do know quite alot about automotive and small engines. This engine is only going to be good for parts anyway...I think I might be getting a new one for free. :D I know I shouldn't, but why is it that I can't put a 2x4 on the flywheel and whack it with a hammer to get it off? :)

Because it's a 3 piece flywhell with a flex-plate.
It *will* ruin it.

-W

Zmoz, Remove the 8 5/16 in bolts that ring the flywheel nut. The outer ring of the flywheel will comeoff. The rest of the flywheel can remain attached to the motor. Remove the six carb. nuts, the three distributor bolts etc. Then you can remove the crankcase bolts. Note- some of the crankcase bolts may have nuts on them, especially at the top and bottom of the crankcase. You may also inspect the piston rings and some other things by removing the transfer port covers on the starboard side of the motor. Good Luck

Thanks Chris. Will that allow me to take out the crankshaft/pistons with part of the flywheel still attached?

Zmoz, Yes, you can leave the center part of the flywheel attached and service the crank, rods and pistons as well as block. If you need to replace the upper main bearing, you will need to rempce the center part of the flywheel. These is a shim under the top crankcase cover. Watch out not to bend it.

Re: How do I get inside my inline 6?

Alright, I've been on vacation for the last week so I haven't had time to work on this. I'm trying to get it off without removing the carbs or distributor...is this possible? Do I need to remove the bolts on the flywheel end? (the ones that were formerly under the flywheel?

Ok...I got it off. Now how do I get the crankshaft out? I don't quite understand what's holding it in... :)

:D Just tried that...got the crankshaft loose. Now it seems like the pistons won't come out. Any idea why?
