Oh great... . Would it rock back and forth if that happened though?

It may, but the side to side wiggle would tend to "load" the junction and break the shaft free too. This goes back to the beginning. You might have to try to get the lower unit down to confirm or deny this eventuality. If the head would come up even 1/4 inch, it's more likely the studs though.

-W

hello
about the best thing you can do is to purchase the lifting ring that attaches to the flywheel. man its the meow. worth every nickel. also buy or borrow the flywheel removal tool or run the power head to the dealer. takes all of 3 min to remove it with the proper tool. I have done it both ways. trust me the proper tool method is far superior to the muscle method. and the lifting tool and flywheel removal tool fit almost every 4cyl and 6 cyl merc as well as most 3cyl mercs built in the past 30 years or so.
good luck and keep posting

If the studs are stuck due to corrosion or calcium deposits you could try spraying some CLR or lime away on them and stand back for a few minutes, then see what happens.I've seen it work on a few volvo's before Good Luck
