I have a '99 Chaparral Sunesta 232 with a 5.0 Merc with Alpha outdrive. I would like to get rid of 2 to 3 inches of steering slop at the helm. Is there any adjustment at the back of the helm to minimize slop? There is a large panel in the head that has to be removed before I can see the controls.

Check your gimbal ring at drive bellhousing sounds like its worn out with the upper steering shaft. You might try tightening the two bolts but if its been like that for awhile then they are worn out.To check it out put drive staright ahead then go back and try to move drive back and forth to look for the slop at upper steering shaft<br /> Paul

check cable mount on inner transom. Mine has same problem and the bolt to the power steering assist is loose as well as the nut which holds the cable housing to the transom mount.
