I have a 1993 115 Johnson. I had an intermentent over heat alarm. Water pump is good with good pressure. So I decided to check the thermostats. I took the hoses off of the thermostat cover. ( ran motor for a very short time-30sec) Port side was flowing great starbard side was pulsating and not flowing much water. Now I got the thermostats out but I cant get the bottom cover off of the motor (you know the part that the cawling attaches to) to see inside where the springs go. By the way the Starbard side fell apart and the port side is ready to go. Also when the thermostats came out there was a long skinny spring. Where does this belong and what does it do? I know this is alot of questions but I also know that their are alot of intelegant people on this wonderful forum that are willing to help out. Thank you for time.

I take it you don't have a manual.
See if looking up the diagrams here will help. Plug in your motor year and model.

kenmyfan, These are great, and I see and loosened the 4 "mounting screws" however the bottom cover is one solid peace and it appears that I have to loosen or take off the motor mounts in order to remve the bottom engine cover. Dont think I want to get into that, was just woundering if there was a trick to the trade that I can try. Thanks

The cooling water flows through the engine and then runs to the thermostats. If you are not getting a good flow out of the large hoses when disconnected from the thermostat housing, your problem is before the thermostats.

Better check your water passage deflectors.

The cylinder heads have the larger screws. You don't need to remove the water covers with the smaller screws.

You would need new cylinder head gaskets and use of a reliable torque wrench. The cylinder head gaskets come with sealer on them.

The deflectors are pieces of 3/8 inch OD hose with a 1/8" ID, or you can buy them pre-cut. http://www.iboats.com/Johnson-Defle...4296561--**********.950504012--view_id.271462

Re: How do i get to my Thermostats???????

I am making a gocery list as we speak :). One other question the previous owner had the tell tube come off in the motor and there is corrosion around the head gaskets. I would imagine it is going to be difficult getting them off. Any suggestions so that I dont damage anything. I dont want to just take a hammer to them......

Re: How do i get to my Thermostats???????

The corrosion that usually binds the head bolts is in the hole passing through the head rather than in the threaded area of the crankcase. Go slowly and do not be afraid to apply heat to the head of the bolt. It's better to work a stubborn screw back and forth than to keep turning it in only one direction.

The reason the you find corrosion in the gasket area is that you have metal parts expanding and contracting at different rates with a thermal membrane between the parts. You just can't keep paint on something like that very easily.

Re: How do i get to my Thermostats???????

Thank You. Got the heads pulled off and found that the upper water defflectors had slid over past the little nipples and were blocking water flow. Also found a blown head gasket, sure am glad I tore apart before things got really bad.Pistons and cylinders look pretty good. I have cleaned and ready to reinstall the heads. I know that there is torque specs but is there a sequence in which I should tighten the bolts??

220-240 inch pounds. Be sure to re-torque after break-in.

Click the thumbnail, please.

Great thank you. Now you say break in? Is this like a new motor where I do so many hrs. at so many RPMS or is just after a run it for a certain amount of hrs. I guess what I am asking is what is the break in preocedure for new head gaskets?

The new gaskets will fully seal and seat after the engine warms up for a while. I would guess after running it long enough to reach operating temperature for thirty minutes or so.

Re: How do i get to my Thermostats???????

ALRIGHT. Got all of my parts and replaced the thermostat (with no leaks) and put new head gaskets with water deflectors. My neighbor with the compression tester will be home later. Cranked her up and she prrrrrrrred like a kitten. I know I am not out of the woods yet without the compression test or the lake run (thunderstorm just rolled in will have to wait until tommorow) put boy things are sure looking good so far. Just one last question after the run do I retorque the heads while she is still hot or do I wait for it to cool down? I dont know how to thank all of the experts on this wonderful site for all of the great help. I have learned alot from you guys and it is greatly appreciated. The check book also says a great big thank you. So the only thing that I can say is THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
