how do i hook up a rpm tach

I have a 1994 50 hp mariner the quick silver controls has a wire comming out of it with a 5 pin male plug. where could i find a harness for it or wher on the motor could I hook up a tach from the auto parts store? And can i just simply buy one from the auto parts store and use it?

If you can find a local auto parts store that sells alternator driven tachs why not. The harness will have to come from a Merc dealer.

sorry if i posted in wrong place, im new here trying to figure it out i picked up a tach from auto parts it doesnt work right so you say i need alt driven tac i should be able to find it at local boat shop? thanks alot

The pulses an automotive tach sees are very different in wave shape and frequency than those on an outboard. Teleflex and Faria are two of the more common brands of tachometers and are available nearly anywhere boating supplies are sold.
