Re: How do I keep birds off my boat cover?

Astuckey,

For several years local sea gulls and purple martins used my boat for their perch/resting sites - and when leaving usually made a mess of my Bimini and front deck areas. Over the last two years I have experimented with several approaches to cure this problem using owls, snakes and spikes - and have finally discovered the solution is monofiliment fishing line !!

For the last two years I have been crap free (for the most part) and my neighboring boats have probably seen an increase in bird droppings. All one has to do is make landing a difficult task and the birds will go next door almost every time. I use a combination of supported line above the bow rails and an "umbrella like" configuration of four lines from two flycasting reels to the radio antenna to discourage the gulls.

The system takes only a few dollars to set up and is easily lowered and reinstalled when the antenna is lowered to go under bridges. The reels were purchased used for $5 - $10 on ebay and the bow stand offs were made from clamps from West Marine and white plastic board. I can post a sketch of the setup if you are tired of cleaning bird droppings.

Ironically, I had the same problem with my '89 Sundowner 205. The boat was moored in a small harbor on Long Island sound. Everytime we would go out to the boat the black cockpit cover, bow, and swim platform would be covered in gull/duck/goose/swan (yes SWAN) crap.

I had good luck with the GullSweep: GULLSWEEP Gullsweep® Bird Deterrent & Optional Mounts at West Marine

However after about 2 months the birds were no longer scared of it and the crapping resumed. We also tried the multi-colored "party streamer" type of things that you see hanging between poles at used car lots and the like. Those worked for awhile, however in the end the only thing that solved it was getting rid of the black boat and buying a white one :faint2:

When we rent condos in Florida most have monofilament strung over the pool area. The birds get confused and won't land.

'Monofiliment works great !! I am using 10# test and the automatic flyreels give a light tension in the lines. When a bird's wings touch the lines (that they can not see) they choose a different landing site and "depository". All good for both the boat and the bird.

Fishing line ran across the top of the boat works best.

I've heard these work, they use long "whiskers", not strong enough for the birds to land on, but big enough to interfere with landing and taking off.

Seen these work good. The birds just move to the next boat in line. Exactly what you are looking for.

The fishing line works good too, and ya can't beat the price.

Actually I think I found the best way-- and don't need to paint the bottom either. I bought an indoor dry slip. Wish I had decades ago!

Nothing has worked for me. I even took a section of rabbit fencing, cut a section, folded the ends up to create spikes, and came back 2 days later with half the spikes bent in other direction and gull crap all over the board it was mounted to. I tried the holographic shiny foil streamers and they also crapped all over it. I tried mono filament line on the console but now they are crapping in other areas. The gulls are making a brutal mess. I tried something similar to the spider, very shiny, and they crapped all over it. Next up, the Gullsweep, I ordered it today.

I throw a couple rubber snakes on the mooring cover when the boat is in my driveway and it seems to help.

I am having a terrible problem with our pontoon boat cover. We have the boat on a lift. The lift has a canopy that covers the boat. This year the birds have decided to "visit " us. Ugh.
We have tried many things. Someone on the site suggested Bird Netting. My question is how do you secure it and how does it prevent the bird from perching and pooping?? Help!

Hi Pontoon lady, welcome to iboats. Responding to thread that has been dormant over 90 days is against the forum rules. Perhaps a moderator will start this as a new thread. Good luck with your bird problem!

Pontoon lady This old thread has all the working and non-working solutions, even how to secure bird netting. Bottom line - Bird poop happens.
