Re: How do I quit drinking

Enough already, dont like or believe in AA..that's your prerogative, But this thread is "How do i quit drinking" not-"look how cool i am" this guy asks for help, statistically,AA has the highest recovery rate out there,so the helpful posts are the ones that offer experience for what worked for them.

Skargo, i applaud your quitting, terrific, but not everyone can do it that way, some need other means of quitting,so instead of being negative about AA,how about not making this all about you,and let others offer there opinion , experience to someone reaching out.
Im done here.

AA ain't the only way, but if you find anything nearly as effective I'd love to hear about it, scientology claims 76% success ( I guess the other 24% escaped).:p

By the time you get something together that works as good as AA you might as well just call it AA because it will embody all the priciples already in AA.

I quit on my own for 5 yrs, you can keep those 5 yrs, white knuckling it on so called willpower was not good or effective as I wanted to drink every day and eventually I did.

I came into AA, got right into the steps and within the week the compulsion was gone...because the obsession was removed. It was akin to having mind surgery, one day I couldn't stop thinking about it, then several days later I realized I wasn't thinking about it and hadn't for several days, the problem was gone.

How do you quit? put a plug in the jug.
If you can't stay quit , AA has an answer.
Give it an honest try, AA will cheerfully refund your misery if you decide to resign and resume.

Its not what you don't know, its what you think you know that just ain't so.

Theres a world of ignorance, AA is as far as you can possibly get from organized anything, alkies are by their very nature a rebellious lot.
Getting them to agree on anything is impossible, thats why every meeting is different and each group officially reserves the right to be wrong.
Each member chooses a higher power of their own conception or chooses not to choose and can stay atheist if they want.

Sound like any organized religion you know?

Scientology on the other hand claims it is a religion and has gone to the supreme court to force the issue ( they want protection) ,
AA claims it is not a religion, AA accepts no outside donations.
Scientology will clean you out financially 100%.

AA didn't make me quit drinking, it taught me how to find a Power greater than myself that solved my problem and removed my obsession.

It can't help those who cannot imagine a power greater than themself, they are hopeless egoists lacking the constitution to be honest with themselves.
AA might ruin your drinking but thats not the solution AA has.

To those who have recovered that would be obvious.

Amen Brother...By the traditions,i dont usually go to great length to defend/explain AA,But it sounded as if this guy was being given poor info on AA,and i guess this is as good a place as any, to do 12th work.

Re: How do I quit drinking

Anyone else notice that mars bar hasn't posted to this thread since May 2nd, post # 20. He is either scared off because he doesn't want to be "jump on" for what he posts, or is not interested in the advice that is being given.

How is it going mars? Has this banter been helpful? Do you still want to quit, and are you working on it?

Re: How do I quit drinking

I've seen people quit in a variety of ways, including "cold turkey" with no help from AA or any other group.

I think success rates with the various methods are related to alot of things - personality, individual levels of addiction, etc, etc.

AA (and other 12 step programs) don't have success rates any higher (or lower) than most other rehab programs.

They're just one, of many, semi-successful ways to skin a cat.

Re: How do I quit drinking

For jones and marine, thank you for continuing to carry the message. We know this is a program for those that want it...not for those that need it.
For those that posted they quit"cold turkey"..good for you. Didn't work for me. Nothing worked for me. Nothing but the program of AA.
And yes, other progrms work for others as well. Actually AA was founded upon the principles enacted by the Oxford groups and long before that people were getting sober by religious 'temperance movements". Google "Matt Talbot" and see what I mean by that.
The drink and all its maladys has been around long before AA came into being. And for all those years people have been trying to get sober. Thank God for my daily reprieve from the desire to take a drink. I know God has been helping others for many many years before me.

Uh.... where did you come up with that tidbit, well, its wrong.look at the link i posted above,AA has the highest long term success rate of ANY structured recovery program.
I'd be nice if people would check there facts before spouting incorrect data.

AA CLAIMS the highest success rate. It isn't true though. They make a generally bogus claim - they have a program that never ends, and they have high success rates for people who stay in the program.

It's very easy to have high success rates when you ignore a large number of your failures - the people who quit the program.

It's a classic example of the "No True Scotsman" logical fallacy.

Statistically AA has no better outcomes than a large number of other structured rehab programs, and last I knew fared slightly WORSE than one on one counseling based rehab programs.

I'm not saying AA is a bad program - it has good success rates comparable to those of other group long term rehab programs, and for any given individual may or may not be the best choice.

Re: How do I quit drinking

Hey guys, you are beginning to sound like a couple of small school children ... my dad is tougher than your dad! Is not! Is too! Is not! ... I do applaud you for keeping it civil and not resorting to name calling or any such thing.

Remember, this thread was started by mars bar, who needed help in stopping a distructive drinking habit. Your bantering about what program is better is making ME want to take a drink ... and I never drank before ! It is important that mars bar gets good info, but you have laid out your pros and cons for AA, now give it a rest. You will not convince each other of the opposite view, you have all given heart felt opinions why you believe the way you do.

Ultimately it is mars that is going have to decide what route he is going to take. My hope and prayer is that mars can beat this addiction and come out stronger in the end. That end is much more important than someone being "right." So, what do you say, let's bury the hatchet and work on getting mars bar well!

i agree. we have a fellow boater in trouble and looking for advice and help and all he is getting is a bunch of foolishness. it doesn't matter the cure, it's what works for each individual. i think it's time the give up the debate and reach out to mars, that's what this thread should be about.

just my two cents worth.

And this thread has turned sour. I hope mars bar got something useful from it before all the boasting, insulting and pontificating.
