I have a 1982 4.5 Johnson Seahorse and I can't figure out how to keep the starter spring seated. I see that there is a bend and a 1/4" turn? but don't know where it should go to keep it in place.

Best bet is to get the manual. The springs on those starters can get nasty. The manual for my 1975 9.9 showed a washer that was missing from mine. It cured a long standing problem that I would have never seen without the manual.

Hi,

I don't know that particular model, but usually the bend/loop on the end is suppossed to be through a slot somewhere in the base of the recoil. Usually it's a combo of the end of the spring straightening out a bit, and the slot bending open a bit (if it's metal), and between the 2 things it's able to pop out and unwind.

good luck.

Brent

My '80 model has a notch in the spring that fits into a slot. It's been a while since I fixed it, so my memory is hazy.
Once the spring broke at the notch. I made a new notch in the spring w/ a file.

Hi Slider,

It's a while since I've done this, but the sequence is roughly as follows:

The metal coil should have an inner end with a shaped small loop. There should also - probably - be a spring retainer that guides and holds this loop into the spring guide assembly (that's a tin-lid shaped cup).Once the spring's in place in the cup, wind it up tight CAREFULLY, and then attach the pull cord which threads and is knotted through the outer end of the spring. Slowly release the spring tension and fit the T-handle on the other end.

Don't that sound simple! It ain't. You have to have three hands and plenty of patience, but it can be done.

Also, there should be a washer under the spring I think. Starter pulley assembly goes on top, and the whole caboosh is bolted through with a shouldered mounting screw.
