How do I remove a shifter cable?

I recently purchased a 1998 Starcraft 170 Fishmaster with no engine. It was a theft recovery and is missing a lot of stuff, but the original Shift control box and cables are still on it. I've mounted a 1988 Mercury 100 HP outboard on it and I've noticed that the shift control cable appears to be about 1 inch too long. I'm trying to remove the cable but I can't figure out how to remove the control box so that I can get to the cable. The control box is a Quicksilver Commander 3000 panel mount. I see the bolts that I need to get to, but they are buried under a plastic cover which I can't get off unless I take the shift lever off. I can't figure out how to get the shift lever off. Is there a some trick to getting at these cables?

Move the shift handle to forward gear then give the throttle only button a sharp poke and it should pop out enough to grab it and easily remove it .Then you have access to the nut that holds the handle on.Avoid any prying with this proceedure.
