How do I remove this fuel filter?

I don't like bending or twisting things too hard... might break 'em! :D

The filter is on my 1987 Merc 25hp outboard. The fuel tank from the original owner was full of black yucky stuff. Now I need to get the filter off so that it can be replaced.

How best to proceed?

Found the old thread and got the filter off!

Yeah, it just unscrews. You might have to use channel locks to hold the top black plastic part while unscrewing the lower white part. I had a friend hold the top while I gently unscrewed the filter by hand.
