I replaced one not long ago. Not knowing the type you have I can't tell you exactly how to r/r but matching up to the correct replacement is important. If you have a teleflex cable there should be a number embossed on the cable. It can be hard to find. If you don't need a new helm then you can get just the cable and the number will tell your parts person exactly what you need. If you need a new helm you can buy it all in a kit and the number on the cable will at least enable you to get the correct cable length. Disconnecting the cable at the mtr and the helm is not hard but varies from boat to boat and yr to yr. Your 89 installation is probably different than my 98. wh

well there's a few different types,, but generally you disconnect it from the motor an tug/yank/pull/jiggle it out along it's route back to the helm..

at the helm.. remove steer wheel an mount screws an remove the rest..

once all out.. measure or take with you an buy same lenght an type..

install is now reverse..

note ::
if'n you hafta remove it thru enclose space/chase,, ty on small rope before you pull .. then pull ,,un-ty an secure.. as so to feed/install back the new one..
