He COULD do a bunch of experimental fuel burning OR he could just eliminate all the extra nonsense, install a new pickup, and go boating.

As far as runs after 30 seconds of sitting, could be results of angel of the boat (level Vs running), fuel pickup position/design of tank. I've seen it work in your favor or against you.

This should solve your issues.... happy boating
I never saw one drilled or mounted to fuel gauge sending resistor on a boat cars all do , neither looks like it has a antiphon valve ,maybe in long hose bib in 90 closest to fill and vent line , All lines for fuel should have , pull the shortest would be aux PU so motor still runs ,genset runs out first . It could be water but that would a lot .

Even in automotive applications, it's not the pump that sends the fuel back. In fact, most pumps are in the tank itself. No marine application has a return line at all. Safety issue.

ok I didn't mean the new modern fuel injected automobiles. I was referring to the old manual fuel pump that bolted to the engine and worked off of the cam shaft.. but I guess some of you don't remember those days. but yes if it went to the fuel/water separator then its a supply line of some type. not a return line as I merely suggested.

Mechanical pumps never had return lines either.

Since Automotive pumps were mentioned, I will go here...: Carter fuel pumps on hi perf Chryslers (cars) had a 1/4" return line back in the day.

Maybe done for vapor lock reasons. In any case, no return lines on boats electric fuel pump or mechanical.

Just for the history lesson...

Before the high pressure needed for fuel injection, the Old mechanical pumps had a diaphragm that was pulled in by a lever running on a cam. As it went in, it pulled in fuel and compressed a spring on the diaphragm.
As the Carb used fuel, the spring pushed the diaphragm back out to deliver the fuel.
If the carb didn't draw any fuel, The diaphragm just stayed in and the cam pushed against nothing.
A very simple device, A diaphragm, a cam lever arm, two one way valves, and a spring was about it.

There WERE quite a few of those automotive mechanical pumps with rerun lines.
They were found on all sorts of vehicles.

could be the PO plumbed the vent line to the top of the tank vs carb.

Since we're off topic, my Ramcharger does too. But the return is off the fuel filter, but still the same principle. When the float closes the needle, the fuel is returned to the tank instead of trying to blow past the needle.

Back to Topic if anyone is still here. Got the new pickup line from Iboats as suggested earlier, on Friday. Cut it to length and installed. When the weather is better and it's worth the day out ( as to not just go out and waist gas to see if we have solved the problem). I will find out if this 2nd short PU line has been the whole problem all along. The previous owner had mentioned he never let it get below half tank (on the gauge).

Re: How do I run out of gas before the tank is empty?

So you removed all the extra crap and now only have one line from the tank to the filter correct...

you could leave one ball valve in line if you want but you don't need it so I'd remove both of them..... Less stuff to fail.

I think ur gonna be GTG now.
