How do i seperate controls w/o a box type

I bought controls at a boat junkyard for a '73 40hp johnson and can't get them apart. Theres' no box , theres' a plate w/ 5 wood screws that get screwed to the gunwale plywood . i got the handle off , 1 machine screw (exposed) , shifted foward and found another screw , shifted reverse and a 3rd screw . but i can't pry the halves apart . the guy suggested an allen screw somewhere , but i can't find one . i took a pic of the back but my camara crapped out after that . do i need to unscrew the back and god knows what else ??? i took out a small screw thats' centerlined w/ the shifter , but got sceered and zipped it back in . help !!!!,....this was suppoese to be the easy part of the job .

i guess noone wanted to touch this one . but to mount this controller to the sidewall is'nt easy . i got half way through taking it apart and realized , i won't be able to get to the back screws when i mount it to the wall . so i just cut a notch in the plywood and let the bottom be flush . i saw allen screws in a parts diagram , but none on the shifter . in 39 years noone ever took one apart ?

You asked in the evening of May 11, and here it is early morning on May 13 and no one has replied. I, for one, just now read the thread. Nope, sorry I've never had one apart. But I'll bet there is a screw holding the handle on.

There were 126 views when i said that , so i don't think it was out of the relm of reseason . whats not in it is that damn screw and how to get to it . the handle has a teeny weeny bit of slip , so its' not stuck . but thanks for the reply F_R . i'd just like to know , cause i hate not knowing , its a phobia i have . is there a doctor in the house ?
