First a little background...<br /><br /> I was having a BIG BIG problem with pop-ups so we emptied and re-booted the computer.All went well for about a month-NO POP-UPS!!!-AH HEAVEN!!!<br /><br /> Now I have this search website installing itself as my Home Page along with some BLUE sites in the favorites file.<br /><br /> Could someone PLEASE tell me how I can get this to stop??!!??!!<br /><br /> THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

Hi Bart,<br /> <br />Who do you use for your I.S.P.?America Online,etc?<br />Also,what page do you use for your "home page"(ie.Yahoo)Most pop-ups come up because you clicked on a certain link or website.You can download ZoneAlarm which may help or install a pop-up blocker(software) if its bad.Another idea is to clean out your "cookies",etc. more often.Internet options lets you check for newer versions of stored pages,check the "never" box.Clear/delete history,cookies and temporary internet files.In Internet options delete the homepage you don't want and enter Yahoo.com or another stable homepage.Do not enter one that you know has been known to have to pop-ups and try to avoid sites known for this.I'm sure there are other ideas here too...Good luck.

I use Zone Alarm Pro, and I have NO pop-ups at all. Careful with it though..it can lock things down too tight, so if a program isn't working on the internet, you may have the Zone Alarm permissions set too high.<br /><br />A few other programs you might try is Ad-aware, Spybot and Windows Washer. These programs will kill any spyware, cookies, etc...<br />Be careful of what they clean, as some of the cookies you may want to keep.<br /><br />As already mentioned, there are several popup killer-specific programs too.<br /><br />And yes, any free sites will no doubt be loaded with pop up garbage. Avoid them if possible.<br /><br />Good luck!<br /><br />H.

I have had the same problem. I had pop-ups poppin up when my PC fist booted up, no brouzer even running!?<br />Fixed it with><br /> http://www.safer-networking.org/ <br /><<<free>>>

http://www.panicware.com/index.html (pop up stopper)<br />I use the free version, it works well.<br />I also use AD-Aware, which detects spyware and deletes it. Also has a free version available.<br /><br />Delete your cookies on a regular basis.<br />Delete your TIF ( temporary internet files) when the browser closes. This can be set to be done automagically.

if ya using MS ie--tools tab-internet options--general tab--home page--use blank button--<br /><br />when the ie browser is opened--no site is auto loaded--don't know if this works for gaol or yawahoo, etc, but does for my isp.

I use ad-aware free version, great program for free. You must run it every time you get off the internet to keep you system clean. (And Yahoo.com is one of the offenders!) They also have a version for about $30 that stops adds from being placed on your machine. Netscape 7.1 also has popup blocker, a little slower to load than IE but I really like this version and have almost stoped using IE.<br />I HATE popups and adds its my machine leave it the **** alone!<br />Richard

As for getting rid of the Home page go to whatever page you want as your home page. <br /><br />Click on Tools<br /><br />Click on Internet options<br /><br />then Click on use current<br /><br />That will set up the page your currently viewing as you Home page.<br /><br />Hope this helped.

I had a similar problem. A call to my computer support number ended up with someone who hardly understood English telling me I needed to format my hard drive and reinstall Windows. <br /><br />Well, being very much against that, I downloaded the free Pop-up Stopper from Panicware mentioned above from PCWorld.com.<br /><br />Pop-up Stopper <br /><br />Then I downloaded and installed Spybot, which is a utility to detect and rid your computer of spyware installed by certain websites that can change your browser characteristics.<br /><br />Here's the link:<br /><br /> Spybot from PCWorld <br /><br />This solved my problem. Both are free, good luck if you try them.

Bart, sounds like you got into Xupiter. Places and programs like xupiter will keep reinstalling itself all the time. They make changes to your registry, spy on you and report back to Xupiter and they can install software on your machine without asking or giving permission. Currently there is a lawsuit against Xupiter.<br /><br />If you look up Xupiter on a search engine, there will be many products that help get rid of it and other spyware. the following is consistently rated one of the best for getting rid of spyware. It looks like there may be even a new class of these programs called Parasites.<br /><br />Ad Aware by Lavasoft.<br /> Ad Aware <br /><br />There is a free version and there are paid versions. The paid versions have more options including blocking spyware from being installed. this should take care of your problem. <br /><br />I personally would not try the reg hacks that are listed on some of the get rid of Xupiter sites as you can do damage to your operating system so it will not work if not careful. Good luck. <br /><br />Just changing your home page and things like that will not work. It will reinstall itself. It is not nice.

We use Google toolbar with the integrated popup stopper. Works pretty well. Small, it integrates well into IE, and no spam. Make sure to keep your Spybot updated and use the immunize function. <br /><br />Bowfin the Computer Tech

Excellent Bart. I amg lad something worked. I had chance to work on a computer with Xupiter recently and the people that wrote it should be charged with a crime. It is an invasion of your privacy and that you try to get rid of it and it reinstalls itself has to be a crime.
