I am a green horn to boating and I recently swapped motors from an 1976 Johnson 70 HP to a 1982 version. Since the cables are different I was looking at getting new controls. MY question is what do I need to look for? What do I do with the wiring that now goes into a old johnson controls. What about the ignition switch which now is also in the Johnson controls. Do I have to individually rewire everthing? What about my chock switch and warm up control lever?

i just did the same thing, but went from a 84 i had on the boat to a 78 70 hp and everything hooked right to the existing control box and cables. i was even able to use my power trim from the 84 that i had on the boat. are you positive the controls are different ?

So, you are contemplating going to a Teleflex control? Is there a reason? You are complicating life if you do. Without doing more research, I think the '76 to '82 should be a direct fit. Unless I am missing something. The electrical plug must be the same color---they are, aren't they?

I concur with Frank - why bother swapping over? The older style Powershift controller will work fine with the 1982 model motor...

Re: How do I switch over Johnson control to a new teleflex type controls

I noticed that the red plug on the motor side had a different amount of prongs between the 76 and 82 model. The 1982 had more prongs but is the same plug. I would love if someone could confirm this. Neither motor has power trim or tilt. Will there be any cable issues using the control box from the 1976 motor on the 1982 replacement 1982 motor? I need to replace the shift and trottle cable cause the connections on the motor side are different. I am in the process of replacing everything on a 1975 Mako 15 that I picked up. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Here are pics of both the 1976 and 1982 ends of the control cables. I don't want to use the control box from the 1982. If a conversion can be made, what cables do I purchase? Ones for pre 1979 or for the 82 model? The top two are the 76 and the bottom two are 82.

Yes, I don't understand that either. What year did they change from the type 400 cables? Could that be the difference?

Back to the red plug: Maybe we are about to learn something that we are unaware of. What we THINK we know is that as long as the plugs are the same color, the control will work. I do know for a fact that the motor side plug may have unused, or even missing pins where they are not needed. For instance, the control side has a purple wire to feed the warm-up choke, which was discontinued on later models. So, there is no purple wire in the motor side cable on the affected motors.
