Yes you can but you need a special meter called a megger it reads high ohms. A quick test is to disconnect the battery for safety, ground yourself or touch the block a few times, then find the plug that goes to the stator and using a regular ohm meter check each plug wire for a ground. Put the red probe in plug, the black to block/ground on engine. There should NOT be continuituy. There should be 3 wires in the plug (3 phase) check each one to ground. If there is continuity then the stator is bad. Not between the wires in the plug each wire to Ground.
