Hey guys and gals. I have a 1977 mercury, 4cyl, 2 stroke, 50 hp. I am wondering how do I test the cooling system without a large tub, since I don't really have anything big enough for that? Is that what water muffs are for? Thanks

yep that is what they are for.
You don,t have to turn the water on full force either.
Turn it a little and fire up and watch the tell tell and adjust water to a good stream.
Now water won't come out of the tell tell until you fire it up but make sure you have water turned on before fireing up.

Appreciate that a lot. I am still trying to figure a lot of stuff out while I'm waiting for my manual to get here.

Also don't walk away from it when running with muffs. They could slide off and this would be big trouble. Never happened to me, but I tend to be cautious when using them. Ussually for oil changes and checking the motor from time to time before I go on a trip.

What Paul said is right about the muffs sliding off. That is why the water is not turned on hard, it can cause them to "hydroplane" right off. Besides, water shooting out all over tends to soak your shoes. ;)

Where do you hook them up at? Might be dumb question, but I haven't found anywhere were there is intake holes?

They slip over the lower unit in front of the prop and cover the water intakes. This is a common universal "motor flush" (real name). The hose screws on one side and feeds water into the intake covered by the soft cups.

I use use a reinforced plastic bag about the size of a sea bag. And yes, you can test the motor in forward and reverse. But I've never gone above about 1000 RPM speed.

What? Am I understanding you correctly that you test your ob in a BAG? And in gear?

How does that work?

I can see my neighbor trying that with his Merc 300s.

cool maybe I will pick one up to test my merc if I ever get the trigger fixed and it put back together, hopefully this weekend I finally got my manual. The Seloc is a very easy and understandable read.

That picture is just too fuzzy for me to make heads or tails of it. Got another photo host site?
