Re: how do we feel about beaching boats

I beached my bowrider for years, now I'll beach my pontoon as well. Of course, inland lakes with sand beaches helps. No real waves to worry about.

soft sand on the Atlantic ocean, or mud banks in the marsh. Beach all the time. There are no "one size fits all" rules for boatings, as there are unlimited variables of conditions (bottom, waves, tides), experience and condition of boat (I wouldn't beach a 1958 mahagony runabout but I will my 20 year old fiberglass skiff.)

So to make a post liek this uselful, skip the opinions and drill down on the facts.

Re: how do we feel about beaching boats

This damage in the pic was on the boat when I purchased it.

Is the damage likely to have been caused by "beaching" on rocky shores?

Does it look as though someone has attempted to seal the fiberglass with . . . something?

Do I need to check the foam? (please say, no)

I haven't had the boat in the water yet, and I want to know what to expect. I did not intend to buy a project boat.

Thanks~

It's just a matter of options that are availble to you. As for me I have 3 yr triplets and getting them out on the beach is alot easier than trying to get them to wad in...LOL..I have a keel guard and it works wonders and i don't have to worry about waves.

Hard to see but that looks like a chip from a ramp or rock or something,a one-time strike rather than wear down. Seal it with fiberglass so you won't leach water into the hull under the gel coat (driving may force water in) I'd take the opportunity to layer it good and thick, but I am the type of boater who is seldom concerned with appearance on things like that.

We beach all the time at the lake. Just be careful of the shore. If we leave it over nite or to go away from the beach I tie the bow off on shore and use a bungee line to the anchor out the back to keep it off the beach.

I like the bungee line cuz you can hook to the stern and power or coast in to deboard and just pull the bow line to bring the boat in to board then it pulls you back out to deeper water to drop the drive.

We leave the bungee line in with a float attached.

Do want to get a keel guard someday. Maybe when we have a nicer boat.

Most of the coves we go in we just "Redneck Trailer Park" with the others in our group.

Beaching is no biggie if it's a sand bottom. Everyone I know does it all the time on the Chesapeake Bay. Just coast in slow and put your drive up. Set an anchor on the beach and possibly on the stern to keep you straight depending on the wind and wave action. Keep an eye on the tide and adjust as necessary.

When leaving, have someone push you off the beach. Don't motor. Motoring off a beach will 1) dig a hole in the beach which will fill up with nasty crap like rotting vegetation and can 2) suck up sand etc. into your motor.

Here's some pics of my old sailboat and other boats all beached.

I go to Pomme De Terre lake here in MO. The campground where we stay has a long deep cove, the shoreline is all rock, everyone that beaches there boat here runs there boat up on a tire.

I beach (rock) mine all the time for shore lunch in Canada. I did have the body shop spray on some bedliner material on the front of the bow(flexible stuff) and it keeps it from scraping the hull. Did not like the keel guard because I have seen these start to peal after a couple of years. This was probably due to poor installation but the bedliner stuff was a freebie. :D Just take it very slow and easy.

I never beach as I'm super particular about the gel coat on my hull. I pull up to about a 2ft depth and then get out and put the stern toward the beach with drive up in about 2ft and the bow facing the open water and anchor at both ends.

Re: how do we feel about beaching boats

well it all depends on how many chicks wearing t-backs are on the bch and how good your stero sounds, hahaha if you have a keel guard or a flat bottom carolina shiff like one of my boats its no problem runnin her up on the bch with my carolina skiff when I hit the bch it looks like a troop transport comming in, my family just walks off the front and steps on dry ground, down here in sw fla our bch sand is wicked soft and really doesnt do much damage to the hull unless you beach were there is a lot of wave action if thats the case you got to run her up 10ft on the bch so you have no movement from the waves

Re: how do we feel about beaching boats

Beaching is one of my favorite things.

I beach the Scarab in Hereford Inlet, North Wildwood, NJ. There is a little shoal/island in the inlet that seperates the inlet and intercoastal waterway from the Atlantic. It's tidal, with rip currents and I would rather enjoy life than be so paranoid that one of my favorite activities is left to not be enjoyed.

North Wildwood, NJ ... just south of Avalon:

Re: how do we feel about beaching boats

Summers the boat is moored off the beach and small children and grandmas make beaching a necessity. LI sound I have plenty of small rocks, shells and sugar sand. after 10 years I'm in the process of barrier coating and painting the hull.
