How do we prevent riser gasket leaks?

Re: How do we prevent riser gasket leaks?

You know, one possibility was to use after market aluminum heads with BBC ex mountings on them allowing the use of BBC manifolds.

I don't think I'm going to do that since Aluminum heads for a 429/460 Ford cost a fortune!

I don't know if there's much advantage there except much less weight.

I have heard of the adapter plates. I'm going to try to see what I can find.

I do have some room to adapt exhaust tubes and I have the ability to weld SS tubing pretty easily with my TIG.

Oh, in case you don't know, along with the manifold problem is the couplers. They are about as hard to find as the manifolds. And if you can't hook it to an outdrive. You have nothing.

Re: How do we prevent riser gasket leaks?

Yes that would be a problem.......I would probably need to do some fancy cutting/welding to get the whole mess to match up!

Well....I found them http://www.cpperformance.com/detail.aspx?ID=342

They're made by Hardin Marine. pricy but not as pricy as those stainless headers or even the OEM system!

After it's all said and done it's probably easier and about the same price as getting the custom made jacketed stainless steel headers .....

Oh well I guess there's always the $20K I can spend on a 8.1Gxi!!

Hmmmmmmmm,.......

I Wonder,..??..??..........

How Close would a Coupler from an old mod.1 equiped Merc. 470 be,......
To the Ford Big Block Crankshaft bolt pattern,..??..??......

The Only OMC Coupler I've Ever seen was a small crankshaft mounted unit,.....
And,.. I have No Idea what a King Cobra Coupler looks like.........d:)
Muchless whether the 470 retained the Pattern of it's parent motor...............

You know, custom crankshafts and flywheels are made all the time for many engines........

I'll bet one could get a custom crankshaft and flywheel with whatever bolt pattern on the back that was desired......then....One could use whatever coupler matched up! (Or specify the bolt pattern desired.....which just happened to match up to the most common coupler maybe.. )

This is really not rocket science I guess....

Ayuh,.....

But the Problem is Marrying up to the King Cobra...........

I'm Guessing the the Shaft Diameter is the same,'cause the Alignment Tool's the Same,.....
I Don't Know if the Spline Count is the same or Not........

Re: How do we prevent riser gasket leaks?

That's right, the spline count might be different. One would just select a yoke matching the coupler. The U-joints are the same.

And in the case of the splined shaft.....I just looked at DougRussell's part numbers from 1987 7.5L thru 1992 8.2L. Same part number was used all the way thru. So it's the same splined shaft.

So it appears that all you would have to do is get the coupler to bolt to the back of the engine......Little bit of machine work with a lathe and use a coupler from a later model 454/502 engine!

Well, don't talk about it, just do it since it's so easy. No one else has. I wonder why? ? ? ? ? ?

Shoot, a little machine work and you could make a crankshaft for a 460, or a block, or...... but is it really worth it?

Well, I suppose it probably has been done once or twice. Not many people out there messing with OMC mods anymore.

Most people just repower or buy another boat I guess.

I got my proposal from Cook Engine & Co in Portland today complete with brochures etc. $17811 for the 5.7Gxi/DPS/FWC and propset....and $20375 for the 8.1 Gi/DPS/FWC.

I guess I have some decisions to make........

It's only money.....can't take it with you etc!

Re: How do we prevent riser gasket leaks?

Think about it man, 460 Fords are old, and haven't been used by Merc, OMC, Volvo or anyone else for over 15 years. Doesn't that tell you something? Ell, even OMC that used them hasn't been in buisness for over 10 years.
Go find an old dead boat with a good 454 Mercruiser with a Bravo drive and install it in your boat. It will be a lot cheaper than building your own coupler and manifolds for an extinct Ford 460. and the cutout in the transom is the same.
Just stop trying to throw money at that relic.
